NOB HILL. Entering this Euro-Asian restaurant atop the Plaza building, you'll feel as if you've just stepped into an exciting, undersea world. The house specialty, crab prepared three ways, is incredible, and roast crab is a delicious signature dish too. Also famed are garlic noodles, whose recipe is so well-guarded that they must be prepared in a separate kitchen! Well-trained staff.

SUNSET DISTRICT. This extremely popular Thai restaurant greets its patrons with a slightly tropical interior and an incredible culinary sensibility. May Siriyan, wife of the chef-owner, sets the atmosphere, welcoming guests, organizing the waitstaff, and offering up food suggestions. The menu includes a variety of authentic Asian dishes, such as deep-fried corn and ginger cakes (a signature), spicy chicken, and green papaya salad. Noodle dishes, studded with bits of meat, vegetables, and herbs, are equally satisfying.

EMBARCADERO. High ceilings and awesome Bay views establish a unique atmosphere at this well-received waterfront venue. Style and spectacle are grounded, though, by Slanted Door's authentic country Vietnamese dishes, which get a California kick from local ingredients. Taste the results in the catfish claypot, crispy peppercorn duck, shaking beef, spicy squid and mesquite-grilled pork chops. Spring rolls also come highly recommended, and great cocktails and scrumptious desserts are worth indulging in. And don't forget to keep an eye out for celebrities!

UNION SQUARE. Sleek and gleaming with polished woods, stainless steel, a sprinkling of Asian accents, and an open kitchen, Straits fills a welcome niche with its Singaporean cuisine, an amalgam of Chinese, Indian, Malaysian, and Indonesian fare. Chef Chris Yeo prizes authenticity and fresh ingredients, uniting them in dishes like tamarind beef, lamb shank korma, chicken breast with spicy lemongrass-coconut sauce, seafood green curry, and black pepper lobster. A wealth of rice and noodle dishes also keeps flavor at the forefront. For a subdued foil, try Straits' outstanding sago tapioca pudding.

COW HOLLOW. Yukol Place offers tasty Thai food in a simple setting with a quiet, relaxing atmosphere. Start with a fresh salad or a bowl of coconut soup to get the tastebuds acclimated. If you're there already, calamari salad with its zesty dressing packs a punch that's sure to please. The standard pad Thai is also a good choice, and authentic Thai desserts give your sweet tooth a subtle, delicious treat. If you're looking to impress (affordably), Yukol is a must.
