MARINA DISTRICT. Dragon Well creates comfort through simplicity. Owners Gary and Christina Tan offer pure, unadulterated Chinese dishes that ably satisfy, including kung pao chicken and steamed butterfish. If you're looking for a prelude to the meal, consider vegetarian potstickers or sauteed pea shoots, both wonderful additions. Although you won't find extravagant decor at Dragon Well, you'll be thrilled by the great food.

POTRERO HILL. Eliza's interior is elegantly decorated with handblown glass art and cut orchids. The cuisine consists of reasonably priced Hunan and Mandarin dishes that folks like for their full-flavored appeal. Examples of the menu's delights include wok-fried chicken with sesame seeds and vegetable moo shu. Be sure to take advantage of Eliza's affordable lunch specials, and head over in advance, because there's always a crowd, and they don't take reservations.

NOE VALLEY. Eric's, known for inventive dishes and pleasant environs, is a top area restaurant for great Chinese food at affordable prices. Shanghai chicken and mango beef hint at the kitchen's talents, and five-taste chicken – battered, fried, and dressed with sweet and sour sauce – always proves a favorite. Folks with lighter appetites will be pleased to discover an array of seafood and vegetarian selections.

MISSION DISTRICT. While not slavishly traditional, this hip restaurant's Chinese fare has managed to win over more than a few folks. Within the eclectic space – predominantly red and boasting unusual light fixtures and decorative accents – appreciative diners sup on wok-seared ahi tuna, walnut prawns, a mouth-pleasing combination of eggplant and portobellos,and five-spice duck. The signature dish, Phoenix & Dragon, is a spicy mix of chicken and shrimp with a plum-citrus kick. The appealing scene is on par with the food.

CHINATOWN. Great Eastern is so appreciated for its authenticity that you're likely to find a large clientele of native Chinese folks enjoying the cuisine. Seafood is always top-rated, as you'll see with lobster sashimi and prawns prepared a number of ways. Other dishes feature everything from duck and quail to abalone and pork. Dishes offer good value, and reservations are accepted for large groups.

CHINATOWN. Hunan Restaurant, owned and run by chef Henry Chung, specializes in hot, spicy Hunan cuisine, and regulars can't get enough of the addictive fare. Folks hold Henry in high esteem, not only because of his food but the large servings (you'll likely leave with a bundle of leftovers) and fair prices. Among the options you'll find are house-smoked duck (and other meats), fried onion cakes, hot shredded pork, and kung pao chicken.

RICHMOND DISTRICT. Mayflower specializes in Cantonese-style seafood dishes, featuring dishes like steamed fish and fresh clams. If you're with a group, opt for the four-person seafood dinner with steamed crabs, sautéed conch, and scallops. Additional favorites include sashimi, spicy beef ribs, and roast chicken. Dim sum and clay pot entrees increase the options. Make a mild finish, then, with either a delectable tapioca or coconut pudding.

The cuisine remains comfortingly consistent, and diners rave about dishes like duck with plum sauce, lobster, and squab. Genteel service and a subdued atmosphere recommend Tommy Toy's as a special-occasion destination. It's well worth the expenditure for such an exceptional evening.

Hakka cuisine (regional fare influenced by Indian dishes) is the restaurant's signature, but you'll also find a variety of other styles. Begin with a fresh spring roll and chicken wonton soup or even beef and fish-ball soup. Main courses include crab in black bean sauce and plenty of tofu and vegetable dishes. Best of all, the dim sum is known as some of the area's best!
