HAIGHT-ASHBURY.   In the 1960s, this intersection was famous for its bohemian life. Today, remnants of the hippie era mix with beautifully restored Edwardian and Victorian homes. One, now a private residence, was formerly the Grateful Dead house (710 Ashbury Street). Other famous neighbors included Janis Joplin and Jefferson Airplane. Wander the many parks, thrift stores and coffeehouses for current ambience, which is still rich with hippie influence. You'll find occult shops and venues that explore alternative medicine, natural foods, the environment, and performance art.   (© 10Best)

Bring some change with you to hand out to the local panhandlers if you are walking on a Sunday morning. Otherwise, the Haight is a wonderful place to browse and buy great vintage clothes, shoes, art supplies and books. Check out Pipe Dreams for a real taste of local flavor. The People's Cafe or the Pork Store Cafe are great places for breakfast at any time of the day. Night life is great too. There are a number of fantastic ethnic restaurants like Kan Zaman and Massawa ethiopian food. Skip Cha Cha Cha, an over-rated tapas experience where they will actually ask you to leave your table as soon as you are done eating to make room for waiting diners. Forget about leisurely discussion while you sip coffee.
