Service is personable and friendly, and rooms are designed to pamper, with extra-large beds, fuzzy slippers, warm bathrobes, and lovely bathrooms. Luxury suites are available. Guests enjoy an excellent in-house restaurant, and the grand hotel rests in the heart of San Francisco. Located 14 miles from San Francisco International Airport. Meeting area accommodates up to 35 people. 110 rooms.

UNION SQUARE. This intimate, European-style hotel was built in 1970 and offers pleasant rooms outfitted with a radio/music system. Most rooms have small balconies as well. Guests find the in-house restaurant and cocktail lounge convenient, and with a location in the center of the business district and within walking distance of Union Square and Moscone Convention Center, the hotel offers a terrific location. Room service available. Located 14 miles from San Francisco International Airport. 94 rooms.

NOB HILL. Sophisticated and reasonably priced, this European hotel occupies a building dating to 1912. Only two blocks from Union Square and Chinatown, it still feels quiet and removed. Rooms are reminiscent of those in a wine country inn and come with writing desk, voice mail, dataport, and honor bar. An evening wine reception takes place by the lobby fireplace, and the hotel provides daily transportation to the Financial District.

EMBARCADERO. For close proximity to the Financial District, this small hotel is an excellent choice. There's a complimentary limo service within the District, a complete business center, voice mail, and in-room dataports. Complimentary coffee and tea are served 24 hours a day, and a wine reception is held each evening. Guests also have free access to health club facilities. Harry Denton's Bar and Grill next door serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, along with live music Monday to Saturday nights.

PACIFIC HEIGHTS. Built as a luxurious guest house for Millionaire's Row residents, this small hotel offers high-quality antiques, superb mattresses, and incredible views. First-class rooms and suites have TV, CD player, VCR, plush robes, two phone lines, modem, and minibar. Rooms are rivaled only by the level of service. Daily continental breakfast and evening wine tastings contribute to the experience. Corner suite 304A is popular for its views of Pacific Heights mansions and the bay. No on-site parking.

NOB HILL. The hotel is found on the famous Nob Hill. This majestic hotel is located near Chinatown and a short distance from Union Square. The rooms are each decorated with a flair all their own, allowing for variety from room to room. A lovely amenity is the housecar service to and from business and shopping in the area. There are four separate meeting rooms that can accommodate up to 75 people. Built in 1924 as an apartment building and converted into a hotel in 1957. 135 Rooms.

CIVIC CENTER. This hotel is found across from the famed Opera House. Smaller is sometimes better, and this would be one of those occasions. The decor is classic, offering a regal atmosphere. Amenities include room service, an in-house restaurant and lounge, and concierge service. Rooms feature a microwave oven, refrigerator and wet bar. The personable service is exceptional. 47 rooms. Small meeting area accommodates up to 60 people.

UNION SQUARE. Maxwell Hotel is elegant and accommodating, no matter your travel goals. The Art Deco structure was built in 1908 and retains vintage ambience while adding modern conveniences. Edward Hopper prints grace the walls, and each room has two phones, a writing desk, dataport, robes, and safe. Bellman and concierge services are available, as is a space for small meetings. The hotel restaurant, Max's on the Square, offers New York-style cuisine and 1930s atmosphere.

UNION SQUARE. Built in 1917, this deluxe boutique hotel is not far from San Francisco's famous designer shopping. Luxurious rooms come with plush terry robes, fully-stocked honor bar, on-demand movies, and complete climate control.
