JAPANTOWN. This quaint Japantown eatery features cozy seating and an extensive menu. Chef Kirk Webber constantly prepares inventive dishes, adding his own flair to old favorites. The tempting results include roasted salmon with portobello mushroom and tomato confit, walnut-crusted chicken with gorgonzola, and Chilean sea bass with tempura Japanese squash. Even desserts are given a creative touch, as butterscotch pudding topped with spun sugar illustrates.

UNION SQUARE. Atmosphere, the highlight of Grand Café, is established by classical columns, elegant chandeliers, and gracious service. Chef Mauro Pando's menu features pan-roasted salmon, beef, and white beans in red wine sauce, and spinach salad with pears, walnuts, feta, and raspberry vinaigrette. Be sure to save room for dessert – the banana creme pie has established quite a following.

MARINA DISTRICT. Greens, one of the city's finest vegetarian establishments, is owned and operated by the San Francisco Zen Center, which helps supply it with organic produce. Inside the voluminous space, diners are afforded spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay. Chef Annie Somerville, the creative force behind the menu, has an artistic touch, as proven by Asian-inspired curries, fresh pizzas and luscious pastas. Soups, sandwiches and salads also delight taste buds, as does a tempting wine list.

EMBARCADERO. This spacious dining room is named for the street it calls home. Its contemporary interior boasts mahogany accents, a dynamic mural of a lively market, and large windows that offer great views of the Bay Bridge. American/Californian cuisine delights in savory, fresh fare, like a rich foie gras or truffled pheasant breast topped with celery root hash and artichoke cream. Live jazz adds to the ambience most evenings.

COW HOLLOW. Founded by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, PlumpJack Cafe gets a built-in share of buzz and chatter. However, the restaurant's elegant atmosphere and creative local menu hold their own against the flash of celebrity. Seasonal menus present twice-cooked, braised veal shoulder osso bucco, pan-seared day boat scallops and sautéed local petrale sole. They're richly highlighted by the carefully chosen yet affordably priced wine selections, which showcase California vintages and include a number of by-the-glass options.

UNION SQUARE. This downtown restaurant, the brainchild of celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck, specializes in wonderfully flavorful cuisine. The experienced kitchen dazzles with innovative Californian creations, and famous folks provide a bit of eye candy along the way. And if the food's not spectacular enough (and it is), a lovely stairway and an open kitchen provide additional focal points. The extended cafe-bar menu offers lunchtime diners an array of options. It's served upstairs in the bar until 11:30pm.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT. Chef Dante Boccuzzi imbues every dish he creates with practiced culinary expertise. Among the options are crab ravioli, steak-cut ahi with tobiko caviar, and Charlie's sea scallop sandwich, a Silks' signature. If you can't decide on an individual dish, order the six-course sampler, and revel in the variety. Cap everything with lemon tiramisu or tangerine crème brûlée. The extensive wine list can be expensive.
