MISSION DISTRICT. Charanga adds a Latin twist to San Francisco's melting pot of restaurants. Reasonably priced dishes are a great find and include patatas à la brava (fried potatoes with tomato dipping sauce) and grilled pork chops with potatoes and green beans (which gain kick with a passion-fruit jerk sauce). In fact, many dishes pair meats, seafood, and rustic bases with a sweet-tinged accompaniment, creating a terrific combination of flavors.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT. When you walk into Kokkari, you'll feel as if you've been transported to an Aegean isle. The inviting interior features a huge fireplace and comfortable chairs, hinting at the coziness of the place. Chef Jean Alberti completes the scene with a host of great dishes, including avgolemono (chicken-rice soup flavored with lemon) and a lush spanakopita. Complete the meal with Greek coffee and a sinful dessert like apple fritters and honey ice cream, drizzled with apple syrup.

EMBARCADERO. Warmed by wood detailing and golden-hued lighting, Piperade is as inviting as a friend's home, and its sociability is just as great. Impeccable cuisine is also of enormous appeal. The chef often comes out to chat with guests and share information about food and wine, and his expertise is justified by dishes like braised rabbit, tuna and potato soup, and veal sweetbreads. Marinated lamb chops and steamed snapper are among the large plate offerings; small plates include artisan foie gras and squid, Dungeness crab salad, and garlic soup with rock shrimp and bacon. Desserts are crafted with just as sure a hand, and wines embrace the Basque region, France, Spain and California.

HAYES VALLEY. This much-loved mainstay has evolved into one of San Fran's favorite restaurants. The interior features Southwestern accents, but the food takes cues from California, France, Italy, and the Mediterranean. Fresh oysters at the bar make a good introduction, and the caesar salad is famous far and wide. Other menu staples include duck breast and the signature roasted chicken (prepared to order). You'll also want to try house-cured anchovies and sourdough bread with the rest of the hip clientele.
