EMBARCADERO. Beautifully dressed in granite and pale wood, this enticing restaurant is a magnet for local professionals. Not only do they relish its fabulous sushi, but they also appreciate a creative approach to traditional Japanese fare. Artfully presented dishes are a visual delight, as are sublime views of the Bay, maximized towards the rear of the dining room. Along with sushi, choose grilled robata-yaki dishes, hot pots, or indulge in an omakase tasting menu. Superb sakes heighten the expensive, high-quality experience.

EMBARCADERO. High ceilings and awesome Bay views establish a unique atmosphere at this well-received waterfront venue. Style and spectacle are grounded, though, by Slanted Door's authentic country Vietnamese dishes, which get a California kick from local ingredients. Taste the results in the catfish claypot, crispy peppercorn duck, shaking beef, spicy squid and mesquite-grilled pork chops. Spring rolls also come highly recommended, and great cocktails and scrumptious desserts are worth indulging in. And don't forget to keep an eye out for celebrities!

MARINA DISTRICT. Greens, one of the city's finest vegetarian establishments, is owned and operated by the San Francisco Zen Center, which helps supply it with organic produce. Inside the voluminous space, diners are afforded spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay. Chef Annie Somerville, the creative force behind the menu, has an artistic touch, as proven by Asian-inspired curries, fresh pizzas and luscious pastas. Soups, sandwiches and salads also delight taste buds, as does a tempting wine list.

EMBARCADERO. Sometimes, the simplest things in life are best, a premise wholeheartedly embraced by the people who run this fantastic oyster bar. In fact, they raise the oysters about an hour north of the city, and their sweet, succulent mollusks are some of the area's best. Indulge in a selection at an outdoor table, and couple awesome Bay views with a dozen Hog Island Sweetwaters or Kumamotos. Add in a glass of wine, some sake or a cold beer, and there's nothing better! Clams, clam chowder, oyster stew and salads can be had as well.

FISHERMAN'S WHARF. What began in 1965 as a small coffee shop has evolved into an oft-frequented, family-run restaurant. It's also the only place amid Fisherman's Wharf's touristy eateries that locals recommend for quality of food and generous portions. Celebrity photos grant silent, smiling endorsement, and broad windows showcase wharf and Bay vistas. The lengthy menu tempts with Italian-accented seafood, including pastas, grilled fish, shellfish sautés and a fabulous cioppino alla pescatore with Dungeness crab.

UNION SQUARE. A bird's-eye view of the Bay and the city greets diners at this elegant, 46th-floor restaurant. Windows stretch 14 feet high to encompass the sights, and when night falls, the scenery is especially spectacular. Although hard-pressed to compete with the views, the California cuisine holds its own admirably. Steaks and seafood are prominent, along with duck and lamb, and after-dinner dancing is reason to linger into the night. Sunday's champagne brunch buffet also finds much favor with patrons in the know, and it provides a terrific chance to see the skyline by day.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT. As vibrant and eye-catching as the gem for which it's named, this restaurant delivers astounding views from its 52nd-floor perch. Floor-to-ceiling windows afford a sweeping panorama of landmarks like Alcatraz, the Bay Bridge and the Transamerica Pyramid. As you marvel at the sights, you can delight in California cuisine: stuffed rack of lamb, star anise duck breast and Kobe flank steak with grilled white asparagus, for example. A substantial wine list provides apt complements, and a three-course prix fixe menu expands your options, as does Sunday brunch.

Within a historic structure, complete with striking architecture and romantic interior, Julius' Castle has been a dinner favorite for many years, delighting guests with incredible views of the Bay Bridge, Alcatraz and Treasure Island. The cuisine, with its Continental accents, also pleases thanks to dishes like braised Chilean sea bass, a pan-roasted veal chop and grilled Black Angus filet of beef.
