2. Original Joe's

DOWNTOWN.   Original Joe's, known to locals simply as "OJ's," has been a staple on the San Jose restaurant scene for nearly half a century. Part of the restaurant's appeal is its simple charm, including a counter that tends to fill rather quickly at both lunch and dinner. The menu boasts some of the best burgers in town, including the spinach-filled "Joe's Special." OJ's also offers several excellent Italian dishes. Joe's became a "must" on every trip to visit our son, who was a student at San Jose State. The food is very good, prices reasonable and the service is outstanding. There's a reason the lines are so long.

OJ's has been on the San Jose scene for about 50 years. Still delivers the goods, and the "special" is imitated but never topped by others.
