OLD SAN JUAN. In 1872 taxes on bread and imported liquor, as well as subscriptions by wealthy patrons, helped to build this theater, one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. Named for the Puerto Rican playwright Alejandro Tapia y Rivera, his plays and others are still staged here regularly. Dance recitals, concerts and other cultural events are also featured.
