ISLA VERDE.   Featuring the only tatami room in Puerto Rico, the waitresses wear kimonos and serve in traditional Japanese style. The house specialty, Sushi Pizza, is anything but traditional though as the crust is made from deep fried rice then layered with rows of fish, ginger and spicy-hot wasabi. Teppanyaki tables are available for fans of culinary theatrics.   (© 10Best)

shockingly disappointed
The atmosphere is very nice. Simple and clean and there is a tatami room. The owner was actually Japanese, which is a lovely change of pace. The food was lacking though. We ordered edamame, ginger salad, a yellowtail scallion roll, rainbow roll, and a spicy tuna roll. First, the positive. I will say that there was a pleasant spiciness to the tuna. We also enjoyed that the edamame was served warm, which is a personal preference. The staff seemed pleasant, if not overly attentive. I will say that if you love salt, then you may like this place. The soy sauce was reminiscent of the cheap La Choy "soy sauce" purchased in the grocery store. It tasted more like salt water with caramel coloring than anything of quality. The ginger salad did not come with a ginger dressing, but consisted of lettuce sitting in a pool of said soy sauce and was inedible. Ironically, the edamame did not have any sea salt and instead came with a side of iodized table salt. The fish tasted fine but the avocado was brown. Also, the rice was not cooled correctly and was massively overhandled, leading to a warm, glutenous, and sticky mess. We eat sushi weekly and I would have to say that this was the second worst sushi I have ever had in a restaurant.
