OLD SAN JUAN.
For satisfying the hearty appetite, a visit to this family run restaurant is a must. The room is simple with crowded tables and noisy patrons. There's even a country balcony over the kitchen and the walls feature the streets of San Juan. House specialties are chicken fricassee, conch ceviche and rebosada de bistec. Bring your appetite.

The food was good but they also run a little guesthouse on top of the restaurant. Deceived by their somewhat well run restaurant business, I decided to make a reservation in the guesthouse and bringing a friend from Germany to see San Juan. After numerous times calling to make sure that I have the room, I arrived to find out that it was already rented. At this time I was rolling my luggage with my German friend thru the cobblestone streets in the Old San Juan. After numerous lies from the owners, I was sent to another hotel where they said they have made me another reservation. This was a lie as well and I was left on the street having to pay $350 to stay at another place. The irresponsibility of the owner was mindboggling. It was truly embarrassing for me to have a friend for Germany deal with such irresponsibility from my own people.

El Jibarito is an authentic mountain country PR eatery in Old San Juan (now open until 9PM most nights); from simple rice and beans—arroz y habichuelas, to more complex dishes like mofongo relleno this is a price/quality bargain.
