This restaurant is easy to miss, but make sure you don't! Descend the stairs in Centro into this small, family-run establishment. Recently refurbished with blue-flecked walls, high ceilings, and decorative chair rails, the room feels upscale but is actually quite relaxed. The menu (in several languages) offers appetizers such as shrimp cocktail and asparagus. The entrées include grilled or breaded sole or a filet steak. Finish up with an excellent crème caramel with peaches. Anastasio Berri is a hidden gem.

This restaurant offers a taste of Nuevo Basque cuisine. The menu of the day normally includes appetizers, two meats, a cheese plate, and two desserts. The decor is traditional and quaint, and the dining area, while not large, is rather spacious. The clientele is mainly older patrons, most of whom are locals. The chef makes his rounds and chats with the regulars. Reservations are a must.

This traditional restaurant recently had a facelift, and the result is a pleasant, modernized restaurant that doesn't forget its Basque heritage or its longstanding reputation for excellence. Try the chef's selection for a taste of what's freshest that day or just go with cod, which is always flavorfully prepared. Great desserts are available as well.

For old-fashioned Basque cuisine with a contemporary spin, try this old favorite in the heart of the old section of San Sebastián. Seafood and meat dishes are specialties. Try the baked crab or any of the other shellfish items such as mussels in flavorful sauce or grilled whole shrimp. The dining room looks out over Plaza de la Trinidad, and you can enjoy an outdoor patio when weather permits.

Nicolasa is located on the second level of a tiny shop in Puerto Vieja (Old Town). The Nicolasa staff helps to make any visit here a pleasant experience, and the dining area itself is modern and cozy. Of course, the terrific food doesn't hurt their reputation either. The mainly Basque menu features a wide range of items, from reuvelto de mushrooms to salad and fish soup appetizers. Entrées include several beef and sole dishes. Reservations are recommended.

OYARZUN-OIARTZUN. This restaurant, which is housed in what is perhaps the oldest house in the valley, is located about five miles from San Sebastián. From several tables in the dining area, you have views of beautiful rolling hills. Chef Abelaitz's carefully chosen "Menú de Degustación" comes highly recommended, and it is hard to go wrong with such entrées as lobster cooked in cinnamon or risotto-topped roast pigeon. An à la carte menu is available. Reservations are recommended.
