6. Lotusland

MONTECITO.   Designed by eccentric Ganna Walska, a Polish opera singer who accumulated wealth (in part) thanks to her six marriages, this estate garden is the product of decades of effort and attention. Its fantastical vignettes feature a wealth of unusual plants, including cycads, which were present in the era of the dinosaur. Other prominent gardens are devoted to lotuses, ferns, succulents, bromeliads, aloes, and topiaries. Orchards, water gardens, Japanese gardens, and a garden populated by blue plants can also be found. Advance reservations are required.   (© 10Best)
