SANTA BARBARA. Intended to minimize the effect of wave action on pricey yachts, this curved stone shield was originally a joint venture funded by the city of Santa Barbara and Max Fleischmann of yeast fame. In 1925, he contributed money to the cause, and the city constructed the first phase of the breakwater (which was expanded in later years). Incorporating stone brought over from Santa Cruz Island, the breakwater is lined with banner-waving flagpoles and offers terrific views of the harbor, the city, and the distant mountains. In the vicinity are a variety of restaurants, shops, tour boat departure points, and other attractions. (© 10Best) More Details for Breakwater at Santa Barbara Harbor
