SANTA BARBARA.   This well-received cafe pays tribute not only to the South but to its fantastic cuisine. The ambience rings of upscale Americana, simple and honest, and the food follows suit. Pumpkin-oatmeal waffles, herb-potato flapjacks with smoked salmon, and Dungeness crab cakes with potato hash hint at the possibilities. Egg lovers appreciate scrambles, which incorporate asparagus, goat cheese, caramelized onions, and smoked bacon. Praised by both critics and diners, TJC also serves great buttermilk biscuits.   (© 10Best)

I have reviewed many restaurants and after reading all the reviews on here I was very excited to try the Cafe. Although the service was good, the food was disappointing. We had lunch at the cafe and had very mixed feelings. The mac and cheese was very good but served with limp tasteless collard greens. The fried chicken salad was good but nothing terribly special. After the reviews on here I expected much more. The salad greens were crisp, the chicken well cooked but the combination was rather bland. The pulled pork sandwich was ok, but was only pork on a bun. Tasted good but boring. We also ordered the pumpkin waffle which is apparently a restaurant favorite, and it tasted more like bread. The waffle was not crisp and had more cinnamon flavor than pumpkin. The big disappointment was the white cheddar hamburger. Bland and served with very greasy overcooked french fries and fried pickles. So much oil that we could literally pad it off with a napkin. It is truly amazing to me that so many chefs do not season their food well. A little salt and pepper goes a long way.

Fantastic Restaurant!!! Would recommend the French Toast for breakfast, Fried Chicken Salad for Lunch, and don’t forget an order of the amazing Sweet Potato French Fries. Service was good and the food was great! Small restaurant on State St., and definitely worth the wait.
