The Wheelwright Museum was built by Mary Cabot Wheelwright in 1937 to display reproductions of sandpaintings used in Navajo spiritual rituals and ceremonies. After studying these rituals for 15 years, Wheelwright obtained permission to reproduce the sacred sandpaintings that were traditionally destroyed after their use. Although the sandpaintings are no longer displayed, the museum currently displays various Native American art exhibitions. The museum's gift shop, built to resemble a Navajo trading post, contains art work, pottery, rugs and books on the Navajo tribe.
