PISMO BEACH. Known for wood-fired, thin-crust pizzas and traditional pasta dishes, this cozy Southern Italian eatery is a popular place for group gatherings and big-event celebrations. An easy favorite is Giuseppe's Old World bread, baked from scratch every day and allowed to rise and fall four times. They also pride themselves on using fresh local meats, fish, and produce, pastas imported from Italy, and the finest quality virgin olive oil to prepare from-scratch fare. Reservations are not accepted.

SANTA MARIA. How's this for a gimmick? Take a restaurant, decorate it to look like something out of a Jack London novel (i.e., an Alaskan shack), and specialize in – you guessed it – pizza. Indeed, Klondike has earned its family-friendly reputation thanks to fabulously innovative brick-oven pizzas – how does one topped with reindeer and white garlic sauce sound? Of course, baskets of peanuts, whose shells you're encouraged to toss on the floor, are big hits as well. The original location is in Arroyo Grande (805-481-5288).

SANTA MARIA. The story of this franchise dates to the late 1950s, when an entrepreneur opened a modest pizza joint in the small town of San Leandro. Over the next two decades, the franchise grew until it became one of the largest in the West. The look and feel of these California classics have changed over the last half-decade, but the quality of both food and service never has. From flaky-crust California pizzas to delicious Hot Hats (sandwiches made of pizza dough and stuffed with the likes of turkey, chicken, chiles, and grilled veggies), the Santa Maria Straw Hat has been keeping local bellies full since 1967.
