SANTA MARIA. Before heading out for a day touring the countryside, hopping from winery to winery, savvy travelers know to stop by this deli for made-to-order boxed lunches (ideal for picnicking on the wine trail). Dino's gourmet sandwiches include the famous Italian Combo (dry and cotto salamis topped with provolone, mozzarella, and pepperoncini) and the Poor Boy (ham, cotto salami, and bologna smothered in cheddar cheese). Folks wanting something heartier than a sandwich can rest easy since Dino's daily hot lunches offer more filling options. The adjoining gourmet grocery boasts one of Santa Maria's largest wine selections, topping out at over 400 labels.

NIPOMO. Since back in the 1950s, this quintessential California roadhouse has been serving barbecued meat dishes with that distinctive Santa Maria flavor. Jocko's is known far and wide for savory oak-pit pork chops, which, rumor has it, go surprisingly well with a number of Santa Barbara County wines. Accompanying the main dishes is a bevy of tasty sides, like home fries and pinquito beans. Speaking of flavor, the restaurant's interior boasts a little of its own, with knotty pine paneling, the occasional cinder block, and rustic tables thrown in for good measure.

PISMO BEACH. These family restaurants carry on the spirit of the original Marie Callender, who supplied many southern California restaurants with delectable, homemade pies in the 1940s. Today, you'll feel like you're in Marie's kitchen when you sample pot roast, baked meatloaf, chicken pot pie, country fried steak, and fish-and-chips. You can also try sirloin steaks, artichoke-and-mushroom chicken, burgers, hot sandwiches, soups, and pastas. The ambience is relaxed; the service, friendly. And, of course, the pies are still delicious!

PISMO BEACH. One of the best places in Santa Maria to sample the distinctive flavor of hickory-smoked barbecue. Before ever serving up his first sparerib, Mo scoured the USA in search of the best barbecue recipes he could find. By the time he returned to California, he had an arsenal that included Sweet Carolina Pork Ribs, North Carolina Rib Shoulder, and Louisiana-Style Hot Links. Inside, Mo's is the quintessential barbecue shack, its casual interior highlighted by photos and pictures representing various facets of Americana.
