SANTA MARIA. Nestled between the San Rafael Mountains and the Sisquoc River, Cambria has emerged as one of the Central Coast's premiere wineries, earning recognition from the likes of "Wine Enthusiast," "Wine Advocate," and the "Santa Maria Times." The land that makes up the estate was once part of the Tepusquet Vineyard, which was founded in the early 1970s, and today produces some of the region's finest selections of Syrah, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir varietals.

LOS OLIVOS. Placing an emphasis on Rhône Valley varietals, viticulturists at the Curtis Estate take full advantage of the Santa Ynez Valley's excellent soil and climate. Resulting products include an award-winning Vineyard Series Syrah as well as limited-production bottlings of Viognier, Roussanne, Mourvèdre, and Grenache. The winery's relatively small size creates a warm setting wherein visitors are treated like part of the family, and the rustic tasting room is the ideal setting for an afternoon of pampering.

LOS OLIVOS. What do Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone have in common with the Central Coast's wine country? Historically, nothing. However, Fess Parker, who played both men on TV and in movies during the 50s and 60s, has firmly established himself as one of the region's top winemakers, and bottlings of his fabulous Syrah, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Viognier varietals earn high marks from such publications as "Wine Enthusiast," "Wine Spectator," "Bon Appetite," and "Dallas Morning Star." Reservations are required for large groups.

LOS OLIVOS. Owners of eight separate vineyards perched atop three mesas in the Santa Ynez Valley, the Firestones are firmly entrenched as one of the Central Coast's foremost winemaking families. From their vineyards (established in 1972) come Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Merlot, and Syrah varietals that have garnered praise from the "New York Times," "California Grapevine," and the "San Francisco Chronicle." In addition, Firestone wines have won numerous awards, including a gold medal for the 2000 Sauvignon Blanc at the prestigious San Francisco International Wine Competition. Tours of the winery are given at a quarter past the hour every day and conclude in the tasting room, wherein guests can sample the latest products.

LOS OLIVOS. This beautiful estate, which sits atop a plateau in the scenic San Rafael Mountains, was founded back in the late 1970s after its founders determined that the climate and fertile soil atop Zaca Mesa were ideal for growing Rhône varietals. Wines from the estate have won several regional, national, and international awards (including a Syrah that placed 6th in the world in "Wine Spectator's" Top Wineries of 1995). The staff is warm and accommodating, and visitors to Zaca Mesa will likely find plenty to keep them occupied: tastings, winery tours, and exploring the hiking trails that crisscross the estate.
