CENTRO. This cathedral seems to appear out of nowhere as you walk down the central shopping streets of the city. The magnificent landmark is primarily gothic in style and should not be missed. The fortress-like facility was built in the 14th century and features elaborate tombs and distinctive pointed arches. BUS: 1

CENTRO. Declared a National Historic Monument, this tiny crypt has extremely low ceilings – about four meters high – and is arranged with three naves. The room contains the remains of ships of the North as well as examples of architecture from the period when Romans inhabited sections of Spain. BUS: 1

This church is accessible only by a footbridge due to its location on a small island, which is about three miles outside the city center. Devoted to Santander's patron saint, "Nuestra Senora del Mar" (Our Lady of the Sea), this simple structure often hosts music, festivals, and celebrations.

CENTRO. This is one of the few religious monuments remaining in Santander since a fire gutted the city in 1941. Beside the popular Plaza Porticada, this church was built in the early 1600's. Look for the ornate entryway, complete with massive pillars and a niche showcasing a statue of Mary. Visitors are allowed only during the masses. BUS: 1
