Overview
Along the northern coast of Spain, Santander boasts exotic seafood dishes, talented chefs, and a terrain that includes lush rolling hills, towering cliffs, and diverse beaches. The Spanish Royals built their new vacation palace here in 1912, and the city has evolved as one of Spain's most popular resort spots for wealthy or noble Madrileņos (people from Madrid). In 1941, a fire destroyed a large portion of the city center, dividing it in two. Subsequently, the area has been rebuilt retaining the original architectural style that continues to impress visitors. This reconstructed area houses Santander's popular Gothic Cathedral. To make a visit more complete, guests should walk from the immense Palace grounds, and then take the route along the Playa de Camel and the Playa Primera de El Sardinero to end at the Jardines de Piquio.
