Savannah Events, Events in Savannah

From hauntings to heritage, music to food, Savannah finds plenty of reasons to celebrate, often on a grand scale. Perhaps its best-known party is the St. Patrick's Day Festival, which has been promoted for over a century now. It compels residents and visitors (hundreds of thousands flood in for the weekend) to swathe themselves in green, drink plenty of beer, and pour dye into every fountain and body of water within sight. The parade lets the spirit of the Irish take root in every heart, and its spectacle is much-loved. Throughout the year, other groups also take the forefront, and festivals are devoted to Asian, Greek, black, Jewish, German and Scottish populations, who make merry as they honor their colorful heritages. Home and garden tours take place in the spring and during the holidays, giving residential voyeurs the chance to see how Savannah families live and decorate. An eight-day film fest is an autumn tradition, and its affiliation with SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) gives it added prestige, drawing submissions from all over the world. And the exuberance of the city finds full expression in July and December, when the nation's birthday and the closing of the year are showcased with light-filled displays over the city and the river. What a way to celebrate! -- Kelly Sigmon, Senior Editor
