RIVERFRONT. Lots of wood and brick, along with a goodly supply of beer memorabilia and neon, give Bernie's casual appeal. The laid-back place occupies what was once a warehouse, and the historic charm is still there. It's a favorite hang-out of locals, who appreciate lots of sports on the telly, live music and a raw bar. The drinks of choice are cold beer and their signature Bloody Marys, punched up with lime, celery salt and pickled okra. Complementing them beautifully are a menu of pub fare and seafood. Great bartenders are an added perk.

HISTORIC DISTRICT. With its large, divided-light windows and the Union Jack flying overhead, there's no mistaking the British flavor of this popular pub. And while it may seem something of an anomaly, it's not only a local haunt, but it was also the much-talked-about backdrop of a Julia Roberts movie. Stop in for traditional pub fare or some American standards, and don't forget to tip back one or more of the dozens of beers they carry.

HISTORIC DISTRICT. Weekends are particularly busy at this Asian-inspired lounge, whose interior gets a color lift with a sweep of suspended red paper lanterns. This cultural cue finds further expression in the tapas menu, which includes authentic dishes like Thai pork salad and ranges into crisp-fried calamari and mini-burgers. Along with the bar, there's an area devoted to seated socializing and a stage that hosts jazz instrumentalists and vocalists (Friday and Saturday). Typically, the activity doesn't kick in until after 10pm or so, but that shouldn't stop you from coming earlier to nibble and sip.
