HISTORIC DISTRICT. Brick walls adorned with artwork set the scene for a visual feast at 45 Bistro, which also features a long, curved bar, a covered courtyard, and inviting upholstery. These physical attractions go hand-in-hand with the kitchen's eminently satisfying cuisine, which takes lovely ingredients and treats them to seemingly effortless preparations. Look for a luscious lasagna composed of scallops, mascarpone, and spinach, or consider a Black Angus filet that gets a measure of spice with crushed peppercorns. Other possibilities include herb-roasted chicken, pan-seared grouper, and salmon served Mediterranean style with artichokes and olives.

HISTORIC DISTRICT. A comfortable space, complete with muted colors, stone walls, and a lounge with a fireplace, puts folks at ease when they frequent this appealing restaurant with its quirky name. While the menu changes seasonally, it's always a font of stellar fare. Steaks, veal, fish, venison, and lamb figure into the carefully composed dishes; among them are steak frites, seared and smoked duck breast, and diver scallops given added richness with a hint of truffle. Terrific desserts are also happy-making, and vegetarians are far from neglected by the talented kitchen.

HISTORIC DISTRICT. The second incarnation of this familiar restaurant returns it to a place of prestige. Still devoted to organic ingredients, Cha Bella not only follows the latest culinary trends but kicks them up a notch, delivering well-prepared, inventive dishes that have diners sharing news of their fabulous experiences. On the menu: seafood pasta with exemplary freshness on all fronts, a scrumptious pan-seared beef filet with mushroom demi-glace (add foie gras for amped-up decadence), and Georgia white shrimp risotto with asparagus and a tarragon pan sauce. You'll be calling your friends too!

HISTORIC DISTRICT. If the weather is nice, this cafe offers an ideal occasion for dining outside and watching the world go by. However, it's just as gracious inside, and no matter where you sit, you'll encounter a range of business folks and tourists. The dinner menu features the same great pizzas that appear at lunch and adds in dishes like a beef filet with grilled shrimp, snapper Veracruz, hunter-style chicken breast, and a grilled rib-eye that's flamed with brandy. Fresh fruit sorbets and more sinful desserts provide options for meal endings.

RIVERFRONT. Set in a five-story building that was originally used as warehouses and occupied by Union soldiers during the Civil War, Vic's offers stunning views and a variety of spaces for dining and meeting. The menu takes a fresh approach to American cuisine and plies diners with reconceived Southern fare. Among its treasures are chicken 'n waffles (a local delicacy), crispy scored flounder with asiago grits and jalapeno hushpuppies, braised lamb shank with horseradish mashed potatoes, and duck served two ways with andouille-sweet potato hash. A good supply of wines highlights the delectable cuisine, and history buffs can marvel at a map in the dining room that was created by Union soldiers and tracks Sherman's march from Tennessee through Georgia.

WEST CHATHAM. Open since 1924, this local standby is known for its friendly, old-fashioned style and homestyle fare. Filet mignon, veal Oscar, and prime rib make delicious appearances, but Southern-style numbers really raise eyebrows. Succulent barbecued ribs and crispy fried chicken are among the headliners, and the kitchen even sees fit to toss in fresh seafood dishes, like the legendary crabmeat au gratin. The classy main dining room opens in the evening, but more casual "kitchen" seating is available throughout the day.
