HISTORIC DISTRICT. Although housed in a 19th-century mansion, 700 Drayton has a pronounced modern sensibility that creates a dynamic tension in its cuisine and decor. Beautiful architecture, vibrant artwork, and high ceilings set the scene for updated dishes that include blue crab-crusted red snapper with lime-tomatillo sauce, a stuffed pork chop with homemade apple sauce, cabernet-braised short ribs, and pan-roasted grouper and shrimp fricassee with a country ham and herb grit cake. A fun lounge is also part of the package, and if you become enamored of the cuisine, the inn's on-site cooking school will teach you how to prepare it on your own!

HISTORIC DISTRICT. Dedicated to using local ingredients and crafting them into a reconsidered "Southern" cuisine that incorporates Continental techniques, Local 11 Ten opened in April, 2007, to a good amount of regional acclaim. Get an introduction with grilled Georgia quail or Sapelo Island clams that are jazzed up with chorizo, garlic, and peppers. From there, sample a roasted loin of venison, pan-roasted black grouper, prosciutto-wrapped rabbit loin with dried figs and pine nuts, or a locally-inspired bouillabaisse. Desserts exhibit the same lusciousness resulting from expert preparation and culinary simplicity.

HISTORIC DISTRICT. Y'all, this is Paula Deen's restaurant, and tons of her fans show up regularly to sample the cuisine she's touted on places like the Food Network and in her cookbooks. After a (sometimes lengthy) wait, folks get to tuck into genuine Southern cuisine, from fried green tomatoes and fried chicken to shrimp-and-grits and pecan pie. The lunch buffet is a great deal, too, letting you eat all that you can in the great tradition of Southern hospitality. While some patrons prefer the a la carte menu, you can be certain that – no matter which option you choose – you'll be well-fed before it's all said and done.

HISTORIC DISTRICT. A historic mansion dating from 1790, this property was restored and opened as an inn in 1976. Its restaurant recalls a brick-and-beams tavern, and its excellent American Continental menu features dishes like pecan-crusted grouper, coq au vin, and crab-stuffed shrimp. You'll also find a half-roasted duckling, veal medallions, and a NY strip with sun-dried tomato butter. Happy hour specials attract crowds to the inn's lounge, which (like the property itself) is apparently haunted by the ghost of a lovesick young woman.

HISTORIC DISTRICT. This reputable restaurant occupies a historic 18th-century stone warehouse and offers a beautiful view of the Savannah River. It does offer exemplary steaks, including a succulent prime rib, but Chart House specializes in seafood. Among its popular options are macadamia-crusted mahi mahi, coconut crunchy shrimp, and pan-seared sea scallops. Crab legs and lobster tail are also constant hits. For dessert, the famous mud pie is a can't-miss, and an ample selection of wines and whiskey adds to the appeal.
