HISTORIC DISTRICT. Eager for good food and a variety of choices? This comfortable Italian eatery can set you up in style. Sure, the food is Old World, but the welcome is definitely Southern. Want a limoncello martini and a moment to chill outside? Done. Craving a cannoli and an espresso? Easy. How about a flavor-packed bowl of pasta (like penne vodka) or shrimp fra diavolo (it is Savannah, after all)? They can handle that too. And they do, with a ready smile and an easygoing attitude.

HISTORIC DISTRICT. Whether you've come for a dinner date or weekend brunch, this neighborhood café doesn't disappoint. Large windows, an outdoor dining space, and a focus on healthy dishes (vegetarian and vegan options are available) ensure lots of business. Popular fare includes spicy Caribbean shrimp, Carolina red trout, Italian sausage lasagna, and a vegetable napoleon. Bolstering these selections are plenty of sandwiches, pastas, soups, and salads. Happily, Firefly is a big proponent of recycling and makes a strong effort to promote sustainability.

HISTORIC DISTRICT. A former department store building now hosts the city's finest Italian restaurant. In fact, it's one of the top ten Italian restaurants in the US, according to "USA Today." Delectable pasta dishes will have you agonizing over what to choose, and main courses include grilled gorgonzola-encrusted filet mignon, pan-seared monkfish, braised osso buco, and a grilled veal chop. The wine bar opens at 4pm, and a late-night weekend menu is served from 10:30pm-2am. Be sure to see the International Oasis Art Gallery upstairs and to take advantage of live jazz on Friday and Saturday nights.

HISTORIC DISTRICT. This happening night spot occupies the basement of the historic Kress building, but its funky, industrial appeal is decidedly modern. A long metallic bar, black tabletops, red-seated chairs, and vibrant paintings accent the room, and a separate lounge features dark leather couches. An extensive small plates menu ($5-12 each) draws from a wide variety of culinary traditions, and you'll want to try a variety to get the full effect. Opt for the baked cheese terra cotta plate with its accompaniments of roasted garlic, sliced green apples, and French bread, or sample Cuban-rubbed beef satays with jalapeno glaze. Wines (by the bottle or glass), ports, and over twenty martinis grace the drinks menu. Live music is a nice addition from Wednesday till Sunday.

HISTORIC DISTRICT. Sometimes, nothing sounds better than some chips and salsa and a plate of fragrant, sizzling fajitas. When that time comes, count on Juarez, an unassuming Mexican place that has a knack for transforming first-timers into regulars. Kicky salsa, addictive queso, and chilly margaritas get things started off on the right note, and from there, burritos, tacos, enchiladas, and all the delicious standards keep the pleasure going. Especially good with a group of friends.

HISTORIC DISTRICT. Distinguished by a curved marquee, this restaurant occupies a former theater space and still maintains a bit of theatricality inside. Thatched roofs, bamboo accents, and a decidedly jungle feel add flair, and the menu offers up substance and flavor. Order some sushi, take advantage of lunch specials, and check out the art and the soothing music. They'll put you in the perfect frame of mind to enjoy spring rolls, fried rice, curries, tempura, noodle dishes, and lots more.

HISTORIC DISTRICT. With its Japanese owners, you can rest assured that this satisfying restaurant turns out decent, authentic foods. And while it can be crowded at times, and minimum orders can apply, the place fills a definite need for sushi in Savannah. Spicy tuna, salmon nigiri, and the classic California roll are all available, along with plenty of other options and a good selection of Japanese beers. Upstairs, you can dine on tatami mats in casual style. Late-night hours are an added plus.
