About 10Best's Savannah Restaurants Selections:
Brimming with fresh seafood and produce, restaurants in Savannah make the most of the South's bounty. Naturally, local cuisine is cause for celebration, and the culinary traditions you'll encounter encompass both the low-brow and the high-brow. The former, often referred to as soul food, is the cooking of the common people. It's hearty, makes generous use of butter and frying, and tempts with dishes like fried chicken, slow-simmered green beans and sweet potato pie. To get your fill of it, head to Masada Café or Mrs. Wilkes' Dining Room and be prepared to eat like you're company. The high-brow, on the other hand, is characterized as New Southern cuisine, which takes customary ingredients and transforms them into gourmet fare, deconstructing, reinventing, and, often, making healthier. You can sample it at establishments like Elizabeth on 37th and The New South Café. Of course, expertly prepared American dishes are always clamored over, and places like The Sapphire Grill and 45 South do them the justice they deserve. Seafood, too, gets dual treatment in Savannah. Fresh-shucked oysters and fried shrimp are simple preparations that everyone loves, but creative chefs also draw out the pristine flavors with Continental touches like sauces, glazes, and nutty, crunchy crusts. Never fear, though – it's all good, as you'll quickly see. And from crab cakes to barbecue (gotta go to Wall's!), you'll certainly never lack for flavor or food in Savannah.

I've had several business dinners at Alligator Soul. It is a wonderful experience every time! They make you feel welcome, like family, the moment you walk in the door. It’s so cool, you immediately think of someone that you will have to bring with you the next time. I’ve eaten at most of the fine dining restaurants in Historical Savannah and this cuisine is the most awesome. Weather you’re a Marine or a princess, you’ll love the warmth Alligator Soul offers. “American, Caribbean, French: Grilled steaks; fish, veal, lamb, pork chops, duck and more.”

You can smell the savory aromas from the kitchen as you walk in the door. The food is fabulous and authentic. The chicken curry is delicious and the jerk chicken is unforgettable. Once you try the food you will be back again and again. This is my favorite place for dinner.

Kayak Kafe has hands down the best lunch in Savannah. With huge salads full of FRESH greens and vegetables and homemade dressings, as well as crispy panini with such ingredients as wild Georgia shrimp, house roasted turkey and ham, etc. They also make fantastic homemade soups daily, including my favorite: turkey chili. If you're really hungry try the roasted chicken burrito or if you're in the mood for a salad try the Broughton Cobb or the Shrimp, watermelon and feta salad. Mmmm..making me hungry just writing this! Bon appetite!

Molly's has absolutely some of the best food around in a really great atmosphere. You get generous portions at a reasonable price. It's not some stuffy place, and you instantly feel comfortable walking through the front door. The guys wear kilts ;-) and they have a HUGE selection of single malt scotches and imported beers. It's a place I'll go back to on a regular basis!

Let me start by saying that most ‘upscale’ dining establishments are located downtown with a few exceptions on the Southside. There have not been many choices of true culinary delights located on the East Side of Savannah, but I believe The New South Café is here to change this. The New South Café has spawned from catering business of Matthew Cohen – Professional Chef Services and is located in the same building on Skidaway Road. The dining room is very cute, quaint, and refreshing. The decor is colorful and artsy. There are even a couple of tables outside for those that like dining alfresco – like me!! The New South Café offers a nice change to most ordinary menus that sometimes are all too common in most restaurants, meaning, the flavors are interesting and the menu choices allow the diner to experience a different take on what one would assume to be a “familiar” dish. If I have lost you by now let me explain what I mean: On the lunch menu, A balsamic glaze is used as a wonderful sauce, goat cheese is used in several dishes, wasabi mayo, asiago cheese dressing, sweet onion fritters, hush puppy mix is used to coat the fried catfish fingers (makes the crust nice, crispy and sweet), honey is used to coat the peanut crusted fried chicken, dried fruits and nuts are stuffed in tilapia served with a citrus butter (yummy!), sweet potato “succotash” and peach butter sit along side of the stuffed pork chop, cumin is used to “crust” the salmon that is served with sweet potato hash and an orange sour cream reduction. This is not your ordinary lunch – this is a culinary delight! They have some great desserts also – crispy pecan pie with vanilla ice cream and deep-fried cheesecake with caramel sauce (sounds deadly, but it is sooooo good!) I went to dinner at The New South Café the other night and I was sort of expecting the same menu as lunch with a few additions which would have been wonderful, but to my surprise, the menu was NOT the same at all. The menu was filled with well thought out dishes combined with interesting ingredients and textures that would make anyone take notice – this place is serious about their food! I started my dinner off with the White Asparagus Soup with a Peach Butter Crostini that was served in a cute mug with the plank of Crostini topping it – yummy! Warm, creamy, not too heavy, and the Peach Butter added a very nice touch. My appetizer consisted of several different choices that were shared. Tuna Tar Tar with Wasabi Mayo on Sweet Potato Chips, BBQ Chicken Pot Stickers pan seared with a Plum Cherry Drizzle, Crispy Smoked Duck Spring Roll with Asian Noodles, Granny Smith Apple Slaw and Sweet Soy Sauce, Beer Battered Fried Green Tomatoes with Sriracha Sauce – wow, what a feast, and we haven’t even gotten to the main course. I believe my favorite out of these was the Crispy Smoked Duck Spring Roll – very nice smoky flavor, good textures and great presentation – a ‘must’ try if you go. For my entrée I had the White Snapper Teriyaki with Pad Thai Noodles, Napa Cabbage, Peanuts, Shiitake Mushrooms and a Lychee Sabayon – very nice, flavorful, and cooked to perfection! The person dining with me had the marinated and grilled Skirt Steak with Cilantro Rice, Black Beans, Guacamole, Toasted Tortilla, Pico De Gallo and Sour Cream – of course I had to have a taste, and it was excellent as well. What I do like about The New South Café is the use of ingredients and techniques that are used in a way that the ordinary diner would not expect. It allows for the creative taste buds to really take notice. There is so much going on within the menu it might take a couple of trips to take your taste buds on the culinary journey that The New South Café has invited you on, but it is worth it. As you can see by what I have mentioned, this restaurant is ahead of its time. Don’t let the location fool you, it is not ‘just’ a restaurant, it is much, much more than that. The combination of interesting flavors, beautiful presentations, and culinary techniques that are devoted to this menu is astounding. With that being said, judge for yourself! Take your taste buds on a culinary journey and experience the depth of how flavors are meant to be used!!!

I live in Atlanta, but this is my favorite restaurant in the world. It's the only restaurant left for me where, after each bite, I go, "Ahhhhh...this is heaven." The problem for me with fine dining is that often the best restaurants use exotic ingredients that I don't care for. Toucan uses traditional ingredients in creative blends and combinations. Last week during a visit to Savannah, I went to Toucan and had the sliced pork loin with a balsamic reduction and onion confit...oh my god...I had to sigh after every bite, it was that good. The flavors combined so deliciously...not one of them overpowered the rest. Truly an artistic combination. Also, the cheesecake was marvelously unique, with a semi-cakey quality topped with Mandarin oranges and a raspberry sauce. I didn't like it on paper, but LOVED every bite. Toucan is much better than most of the other restaurants on the Savannah Top Ten list, especially the incredibly overrated tourist trap Lady And Sons (be prepared to feel sick afterwards due to the over-the-top greasy richness of everything, even if you eat a small portion) and the atmosphere-only, totally mediocre food of Il Pasticcio. Toucan rules!
