HISTORIC DISTRICT. This sleek wine bar offers a pleasant atmosphere and outstanding cuisine. Red and black décor accents the interior, and the windows face Broughton Street. Creative appetizers, salads and main course offerings incorporate a variety of fun and interesting flavors. Try the scallops, topped with cumin and served on corn and black bean relish, or seared duck breast with a fried pastry cone. An affordable selection of wines is available by the glass.

HISTORIC DISTRICT. Y'all, this is Paula Deen's restaurant, and tons of her fans show up regularly to sample the cuisine she's touted on places like the Food Network and in her cookbooks. After a (sometimes lengthy) wait, folks get to tuck into genuine Southern cuisine, from fried green tomatoes and fried chicken to shrimp-and-grits and pecan pie. The lunch buffet is a great deal, too, letting you eat all that you can in the great tradition of Southern hospitality. While some patrons prefer the a la carte menu, you can be certain that – no matter which option you choose – you'll be well-fed before it's all said and done.

3. Olde Pink House

HISTORIC DISTRICT. Olde Pink House is where Savannah's elite go to eat, and the food, expectedly enough, is fantastic! Seafood and Southern fare are at the forefront, as proven by she-crab soup, Caesar salad with fried oysters, and all sorts of fresh fish, from flounder to trout. Try grouper with blue crab in Vidalia onion sauce, or go for one of the delicious pork, duck, and veal dishes. The special dessert is sweet ice cream in a praline basket – nothing more needs to be said about that! Downstairs, Olde Pink House boasts the cozy Planters Tavern, which features live music on Saturday nights.

4. Moon River Brewing Company

HISTORIC DISTRICT. Moon River Brewing Company is the city's only brew pub, and it makes the finest beer in the Southeast right on the premises. Ask for a taster glass to sample any or all of the brews to see which you like best. Also offered are a full bar and great food. Start off with spinach artichoke dip, and then consider excellent and reasonably priced sandwiches, pastas, appetizers, and more. Entrees include baby back ribs, crab cakes, blackened sea scallops, and chicken and sausage Creole. Daily lunch specials and lots of artwork are also crowd-pleasers.

5. Belford's

HISTORIC DISTRICT. A bountiful breakfast buffet draws hungry patrons to Belford's each morning, and the a la carte menu features items like a blue crab frittata and traditional eggs Benedict. Sunday brunch follows suit and includes great choices from the lunch menu, including shrimp and grits, crab cakes, and filling sandwiches. At dinner, you'll find options like Cajun lobster ravioli, shrimp-stuffed filet mignon, and grilled fish. A favorite.

6. Elizabeth on 37th

HISTORIC DISTRICT. Arguably Savannah's best restaurant, this award-winning grande dame gets lots of attention from foodies and has been the recipient of many culinary awards. The menu updates Southern fare, making abundant use of fresh seafood and items like black-eyed peas, grits, okra, pecans, and the like. The salads even feature home-grown herbs. A terrific wine list complements the cuisine beautifully, and 7-course tasting menus are available if you'd like to give yourself over to the chef's expertise. The stunning mansion that houses Elizabeth is gorgeous inside too, made even more beautiful with candelight and crackling fires.

7. 17 Hundred 90 Inn and Restaurant

HISTORIC DISTRICT. A historic mansion dating from 1790, this property was restored and opened as an inn in 1976. Its restaurant recalls a brick-and-beams tavern, and its excellent American Continental menu features dishes like pecan-crusted grouper, coq au vin, and crab-stuffed shrimp. You'll also find a half-roasted duckling, veal medallions, and a NY strip with sun-dried tomato butter. Happy hour specials attract crowds to the inn's lounge, which (like the property itself) is apparently haunted by the ghost of a lovesick young woman.

8. Huey's on the River

RIVERFRONT. Great breakfasts, with delicious Southern and New Orleans flair, are a staple here and include dishes like eggs sardou, Creole omelets, pain perdue, and simply awesome beignets and coffee. Lunch and dinner options include fried catfish, filé gumbo, po' boys, crawfish etouffée, fried green tomatoes, and shrimp and grits. Desserts are well worth the calories, especially praline cheesecake and the bread pudding special, which changes daily.

9. Crab Shack

TYBEE ISLAND. Everybody loves the Crab Shack, locals and tourists alike! They've even had their share of celebrity visitors. The best part about eating at the Crab Shack is sitting under the huge canopy of live oak trees with the view of the marsh. The Lowcountry Boil, a mixture of shrimp, sausage, corn and potatoes, is especially popular. Much of their seafood is steamed, which will appeal to the health conscious. Prices are also reasonable. Take your friends, wear something casual, and sit back and enjoy the view while you eat some of the best seafood in Savannah.

10. Shrimp Factory

313 E River St, Savannah, GA 31401 · 912-236-4229

RIVERFRONT. A white-painted brick building with candy-striped awnings establishes a cheery welcome at this long-lived eatery. Wood flooring, beams, and walls create a charming, rustic vibe, and there's typically a fun atmosphere at the bar. The restaurant has many options but places an emphasis on shrimp, crab, and fish selections. You'll also enjoy pine bark stew (a Southern bouillabaisse), charbroiled yellowfin tuna, baked deviled crabs, and a hefty seafood platter. In addition, the Shrimp Factory offers one of the best happy hours on River Street, and its Chatham Artillery Punch will have a positive effect on your mood!
