DES PLAINES. Find out how the fabled Golden Arches began at this unique museum, which is an exact replica of the first McDonald's, opened in nearby Des Plaines by Ray Kroc in the mid-'50s. The classic roadside diner – since replaced by a more streamlined, utilitarian design – hearkens back to the franchise's earliest days, when fresh potatoes were peeled for fries and root-beer was drawn from a barrel. The museum contains original kitchen equipment, and walls are decorated with vintage photographs.
