SOUTH SCOTTSDALE. Focusing on fruits of the sea, this cozy little Mexican joint serves delicious dishes for extremely reasonable prices. Although the restaurant (a converted house) is somewhat crowded, the patio offers relief from the bustling dining room. Order kabobs with juicy shrimp and scallops as an appetizer to share before tackling your main course. Camaron Azteca is a hearty mix of Guaymas shrimp, cheese, onion, tomato, and salsa, served in a lava rock bowl. Less ambitious diners can try ceviche or calamari or simply nibble on first-rate chips and salsa.

OLD TOWN. Calling Civic Center Mall home, AZ88 offers great views of the complex's fountains and green spaces from its agreeable patio. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner, but Scottsdalers frequently show up for late-night dining that continues until 12:30am. Creative, delicious appetizers and entrees like bacon-wrapped water chestnuts and a fried, spinach-topped portobello mushroom won't strain your wallet. Regulars also rave about galettes, crispy flatbread rounds heaped with bacon, caramelized onions, olives, and parmesan cheese.

NORTH SCOTTSDALE. Owned and operated by New York natives, Kashman's brings a taste of the Big Apple to Arizona. Folks who come often claim one of the bistro tables and order savory fare like a baguette stuffed with brie, Pennsylvania ham, and champagne mustard, or a smoked salmon platter with tomato, red onion, and capers. Distinctive salads (some topped with juicy grilled chicken) and singular soups like autumn pumpkin add depth to a midday meal. Flavored and regular coffees and, of course, bagels are also available.

SOUTH SCOTTSDALE. Fun, festive decor creates a relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy heaping portions of Mexican favorites. If you're famished, an appetizer of beef gorditas will more than tide you over until the main course arrives. Blue corn crab enchiladas, grilled chicken with spinach in chipotle cream sauce, and to-die-for guacamole are frequently ordered. Head to the patio for a change of pace and to tackle a luscious dessert – chocolate tamales are calling.

OLD TOWN. A distinctly '70s vibe pervades Mickey's, from its shag carpeting-heavy decor to its appetizer menu, reimagined as "munchie quellers." Despite the time warp, patrons appreciate great happy hour specials on food and drink and tasty grub served late into the evening. Hand-cut sweet potato fries, a spicy Cajun pita, and pesto alfredo pizza are just a few dishes that are tasty on their own and also admirably soak up Mickey's delicious specialty drinks. Salads, subs, and sandwiches comprise the majority of the menu. Don't forget French Canadian toast for dessert – thick-cut slices drenched in maple syrup and whipped cream.

OLD TOWN. Stuffed crust, thin crust, Chicago-style, build-your-own – if you're a pizzaphile, make your way to Oregano's. Though the place is often packed with families and students, satisfied regulars affirm that the pies are worth the wait. Try something new with house specialties like the Bistro Classic and the El Picasso, or opt for a pasta dish like artichoke lasagna. Servings are large, and happily, prices are small. Their take on dessert – the pleasing pizza cookie – is a sweet, chocolate-laden pie-cookie, begging to be demolished while still warm and oozy.

OLD TOWN. Packed with baseball memorabilia, this Scottsdale standby is a hit with locals as well as with major league players who visit Arizona each spring for Cactus League ball. The menu is filled with traditional steakhouse fare (including the popular prime rib of beef au jus), along with poultry, seafood, and hearty sides. Lunchtime sees affordable, hearty sandwiches and a busy scene at the bar while weekend nights often feature live music. With a little something for everyone, Pink Pony is a natural choice for a relaxed evening with family or friends.

OLD TOWN. Truly a trip back in time, Sugar Bowl has changed little since it opened in 1958. Pink-and-white decor, swivel stools, and plenty of cool, creamy treats make for an authentic soda parlor experience. All your favorites are here: malts, shakes, sodas, floats, ice cream cones, and sundaes in a multitude of flavors with toppings aplenty. If you're craving something more substantive, sandwiches, soups, salads, burgers, and hot dogs can also be had. A great dessert spot that will please the whole family.
