A nondescript location belies the delicious Italian cuisine served inside this popular restaurant. Locals flock to Arrivederci for tender pastas and succulent meat and seafood dishes. Lobster-stuffed ravioli in a creamy, saffron-infused sauce and delicate potato gnocchi in a four-cheese sauce are two of the most requested entrees, while carpaccio and eggplant parmigiana also win raves. Naturally, desserts are of equally high quality, especially decadent ricotta cheesecake. Intimate ambiance and attentive service are pluses.

SCOTTSDALE. Affordable and tasty! That's the combination at Guido's restaurant and Italian grocery. At lunch, the protocol is to order at the counter; dinner is a sit-down affair – both are casual. Be sure and order Guido's famous "frizel," a mound of toasted Italian bread smothered in tomato, red onion, pesto, olive oil, red wine vinegar and Romano cheese. Sausages, sandwiches, pizzas, pastas, subs, fried chicken, chicken parmesan, and salads complete the menu. Desserts include rich ricotta cheesecake and other Italian sweets.

SCOTTSDALE. The exterior may not draw you in, but fantastic Northern Italian cuisine, attentive service, and welcoming ambience make you wish you never had to leave. From start to finish, the menu offers a wide range of excellent choices. Tonnaccio affumicato (smoked ahi with smoked salmon dressing) and calamari al carbone are among the starters; entrees include risotti alla boscaiola (porcini mushrooms, vegetables, parmigiano cheese, and white truffle oil) and ossobuco. Although dessert may seem an extravagance, diners simply can't pass up expertly prepared tiramasu.

SCOTTSDALE. Leccabaffi translates from the Italian as "lick your mustache," and the food is so good that you may want to do just that! The attentive staff works diligently to make your experience as authentic as if you were in a fine establishment in Tuscany. Inside the restaurant, an enticing display of antipasto, including risotto with fresh artichokes and homemade tagliatelle with veal sauce, whets your appetite. Tantalizing menu options make decisions difficult, but you can't go wrong with a fontina-stuffed veal chop or spicy spaghettini with shrimp. Save room for dessert!

NORTH SCOTTSDALE. An occasionally noisy dining room, especially at lunch, is a small price to pay for North's innovative, simply-prepared New Italian dishes. The bustling atmosphere of Kierland Commons is the perfect setting for this hip restaurant, and the ample patio allows you to blend right in. Heavy sauces are foregone in favor of lighter, cleaner preparations. Lasagna is crafted with chicken, tomato, and shiitake mushrooms; thin-crust pizzas are topped with fresh, flavorful ingredients. Exotic martinis and a delightful hazelnut and chocolate mousse dessert are welcome surprises.

OLD TOWN. Stuffed crust, thin crust, Chicago-style, build-your-own – if you're a pizzaphile, make your way to Oregano's. Though the place is often packed with families and students, satisfied regulars affirm that the pies are worth the wait. Try something new with house specialties like the Bistro Classic and the El Picasso, or opt for a pasta dish like artichoke lasagna. Servings are large, and happily, prices are small. Their take on dessert – the pleasing pizza cookie – is a sweet, chocolate-laden pie-cookie, begging to be demolished while still warm and oozy.

OLD TOWN. Charming red-and-white checked tablecloths, glass lamps, and inexplicably hunky waiters – welcome to Pasta Brioni. Traditional Italian dishes populate the menu; while there are no moments of culinary genius, what's delivered is solid and tasty. Homemade spaghetti and meatballs, linguini pescatore (clams, mussels, calamari, and shrimp), and heart-healthy cappellini with basil and tomato are favorites. Hefty calzones and generously-sized pizzas are pasta alternatives. Dessert involves treats like tiramisu and hazelnut ice cream.

PINNACLE PEAK. You'll be so amazed by Sassi's setting and decor, you might forget to order food! This one-time farmhouse has undergone a multi-million dollar renovation and now houses five dining rooms, each with fireplace and patio. Stunning views of the Sonoran desert are on display at every turn. When you finally focus on dinner, you'll find carefully prepared Southern Italian fare organized by the owner-chefs into a dining "journey." Opt for ricotta gnocchi in wild mushroom ragu or pesce al cartoccio – fresh fish steamed in a paper bag and dressed in lemon, ginger, scallions, and sage. Naturally, dessert doesn't disappoint – try gorgonzola-stuffed pears with candied walnuts for a sugary, savory treat.

SCOTTSDALE. Diners enjoy Un Bacio's authentic Northern Italian cuisine as much as they relish its inviting atmosphere and friendly service. Menu selections include risotto Milanese and osso bucco Milanese, but if you don't find exactly what you want, the restaurant welcomes off-the-menu ordering. That way, your imagination and your reality can always be in synch. Diners may sit in the dining room or on the covered porch, which comes complete with a cozy fireplace and live piano music.

SCOTTSDALE. Thanks in part to its friendly neighborhood feel, this establishment keeps customers coming back for more. Special Venetian dishes set the restaurant apart: gnocchi, luganega con verzette e polenta (sausage and polenta), and baccala mantecato (salt-cured cod mousse served over wedges of polenta) are among the highlights. Dessert options include everything from tiramisu to semifreddo con frutta secca – a mixture of half-frozen sweetened meringue and whipped cream.
