SCOTTSDALE. Chompie's is a NY-style deli that serves three meals a day and everything in-between. Whether you're a bagel and cream cheese kind of morning person or a steak and eggs type, Chompie's has something for you. There are even low-carb and low-fat selections. At lunch, mile-high sandwiches are the way to go – the variety of meats and cheeses is astounding. Dinner runs the gamut from roasted chicken to stuffed cabbage to fish and chips. If you're still hungry after all that, feast on a made-from-scratch brownie or a black-and-white cookie, or have a slice of cheesecake, strudel, or Brooklyn seven-layer cake.

SCOTTSDALE. Serving innovative American cuisine with Italian, Southwestern, and Mexican influences, Cowboy Ciao also features eye-catching decor, thanks in part to a star-studded ceiling. The varied menu includes elk strip loin with mushroom risotto, and roasted pork shank with cumin, chipotle, paprika, and Mexican oregano. The signature dish – exotic mushroom pan fry – consists of wild mushrooms in ancho cream sauce over polenta, and it is divine. The wine list is extensive, and the dessert menu is truly irresistible.

NORTH SCOTTSDALE. Fresh, innovative takes on the same old, same old Chinese favorites make Flo's a welcome addition to the Scottsdale dining scene. Ordering Flo's twist on chips and salsa – wontons and dipping sauce – is practically mandatory. Chicken, beef, pork, and fish comprise the greater part of the menu, but preparations are new and inventive. Spicy cinnamon shrimp, tomato beef, and jalapeno pork and bacon rattle your preconceptions about standard Chinese food. And while not claiming to be an authentic Asian delicacy, chocolate cheesecake is a rich, satisfying ending to your meal.

SCOTTSDALE. Affordable and tasty! That's the combination at Guido's restaurant and Italian grocery. At lunch, the protocol is to order at the counter; dinner is a sit-down affair – both are casual. Be sure and order Guido's famous "frizel," a mound of toasted Italian bread smothered in tomato, red onion, pesto, olive oil, red wine vinegar and Romano cheese. Sausages, sandwiches, pizzas, pastas, subs, fried chicken, chicken parmesan, and salads complete the menu. Desserts include rich ricotta cheesecake and other Italian sweets.

SCOTTSDALE. It may be difficult to find a Scottsdale restaurant serving truly authentic Cuban cuisine, but the search ends here. The wide-ranging menu's Cuban and Latin American dishes include sopa de frijoles negros (black bean soup), pollo Cubano (chicken smothered in citrus, garlic, and onion sauce), and paella à la Havana. Make a conscious effort to save room for dessert; a few tempting options include the delectable Caribbean candy bar, chocolate bread pudding, and guava cheesecake.

NORTH SCOTTSDALE. Owned and operated by New York natives, Kashman's brings a taste of the Big Apple to Arizona. Folks who come often claim one of the bistro tables and order savory fare like a baguette stuffed with brie, Pennsylvania ham, and champagne mustard, or a smoked salmon platter with tomato, red onion, and capers. Distinctive salads (some topped with juicy grilled chicken) and singular soups like autumn pumpkin add depth to a midday meal. Flavored and regular coffees and, of course, bagels are also available.

Every day the aroma of freshly baked bread fills this sunny neighborhood spot. Loaves are allowed to rise for 16 to 24 hours before being baked and served with spreads of butter and jam or as part of a delicious lunch sandwich. Decadent choices include hot gourmet creations like chicken pesto and feta, honey-cured ham and swiss, and the BLT Plus (the "plus" referring to herb mayo and avocado). A wide array of soups, salads, and pastas is also available; try smoked salmon alfredo or tomato bread salad.

SCOTTSDALE. An interior of mellow wood and Texas limestone defines the casual atmosphere of this privately-owned chain. Dishes come from a variety of backgrounds but share a common Southwestern flair. Signature items include voodoo tuna and miso glazed salmon. You can also choose from pork roast vera cruz, wild mushroom enchiladas, and herb-grilled chicken. An array of appetizers, salads and sandwiches satisfy lighter appetites. For dessert, give ancho chili fudge pie a try; the chili's delicate heat intensifies the rush of chocolate. In the evening, the bar mixes up terrific margaritas and plays host to a crowd of stylish professionals.
