SCOTTSDALE. Across the US, this popular chain tempts thousands upon thousands of taste buds. The inviting Scottsdale branch features booth seating, accent lighting, and dark wood paneling, along with mouthwatering veggie burgers, juicy steaks cooked over an oak fire, and plenty more. If you're too hungry to wait for a main course, try Houston's famous spinach dip – it's so good you may have to place a second order! After work hours, Houstons' bar attracts a crowd, so be sure to get there early if you don't want to wait for a table.

NORTH SCOTTSDALE. In a nod to a bygone era of fine dining, Mastro's recreates the intimate, elegant, swanky ambience of steakhouses from the '50s and '60s. Accents of river rock and dark wood foster an upscale, classy atmosphere – the perfect setting for a truly exceptional dinner. Steaks are dry-aged and seasoned with a house blend of spices, resulting in tender, flavorful entrées whether you choose a bone-in filet, chef's-cut New York strip, or rib-eye chop. Seafood, lamb, veal, and pork also have a place on the menu, as does a lengthy list of sides, including ten preparations of potatoes.

3. Arrivederci

A nondescript location belies the delicious Italian cuisine served inside this popular restaurant. Locals flock to Arrivederci for tender pastas and succulent meat and seafood dishes. Lobster-stuffed ravioli in a creamy, saffron-infused sauce and delicate potato gnocchi in a four-cheese sauce are two of the most requested entrees, while carpaccio and eggplant parmigiana also win raves. Naturally, desserts are of equally high quality, especially decadent ricotta cheesecake. Intimate ambiance and attentive service are pluses.

SCOTTSDALE. Classic Southwestern decor with warm touches of carved wood welcomes guests to this relaxed dining room. The food, happily, is anything but subdued. Traditional Mexican fare finds new life in zesty entrees and flavorful sauces. Seafood often takes center stage, as evidenced by plump shrimp and fresh tuna paired with local vegetables and chilies. Any dish is certain to rejuvenate tired taste buds, but for a spectacular effect and tender, juicy meat, try roast suckling pig. La Hacienda's signature dish is carved tableside and is certain to draw curious glances from less adventurous diners. Great for groups.

Cozy and often crowded, this petite French Country breakfast spot is where Scottsdalers go when they have the morning off. Crepes as good as these demand a long, lingering sit-down, so come prepared. Enjoy piping hot coffee with your choice of traditional sweet or savory crepes, including temptations like spinach and cheese, salmon and scrambled eggs, and banana and Nutella. Omelets, sandwiches, and salads complete the menu and provide alternative menu options for lunch. A special spot for a lazy morning with good friends.

SCOTTSDALE. Serving innovative American cuisine with Italian, Southwestern, and Mexican influences, Cowboy Ciao also features eye-catching decor, thanks in part to a star-studded ceiling. The varied menu includes elk strip loin with mushroom risotto, and roasted pork shank with cumin, chipotle, paprika, and Mexican oregano. The signature dish – exotic mushroom pan fry – consists of wild mushrooms in ancho cream sauce over polenta, and it is divine. The wine list is extensive, and the dessert menu is truly irresistible.

OLD TOWN. Stuffed crust, thin crust, Chicago-style, build-your-own – if you're a pizzaphile, make your way to Oregano's. Though the place is often packed with families and students, satisfied regulars affirm that the pies are worth the wait. Try something new with house specialties like the Bistro Classic and the El Picasso, or opt for a pasta dish like artichoke lasagna. Servings are large, and happily, prices are small. Their take on dessert – the pleasing pizza cookie – is a sweet, chocolate-laden pie-cookie, begging to be demolished while still warm and oozy.

SCOTTSDALE. Laid-back and unpretentious, this Valley restaurant serves creative interpretations of comfort food. The interior is totally personal, an off-beat cowboy decor enlivened by hip accents. The cuisine, which has garnered a number of awards, places an emphasis on local, organic foods. The menu constantly changes and is dependent on whatever is fresh and available each day. Many of the entrees are grilled or cooked in a wood-burning oven, imparting them with a smoky flavor that seems appropriate to the region. The wine list, all 5000 bottles of it, ensures that each meal will find its best complement.

SCOTTSDALE. Diners enjoy Un Bacio's authentic Northern Italian cuisine as much as they relish its inviting atmosphere and friendly service. Menu selections include risotto Milanese and osso bucco Milanese, but if you don't find exactly what you want, the restaurant welcomes off-the-menu ordering. That way, your imagination and your reality can always be in synch. Diners may sit in the dining room or on the covered porch, which comes complete with a cozy fireplace and live piano music.

SCOTTSDALE. Thanks in part to its friendly neighborhood feel, this establishment keeps customers coming back for more. Special Venetian dishes set the restaurant apart: gnocchi, luganega con verzette e polenta (sausage and polenta), and baccala mantecato (salt-cured cod mousse served over wedges of polenta) are among the highlights. Dessert options include everything from tiramisu to semifreddo con frutta secca – a mixture of half-frozen sweetened meringue and whipped cream.
