PIONEER SQUARE.
When Seattle's 1889 fire leveled part of the city, officials decided to raise the city to a higher level, both metaphorically and literally. The portion left behind (and beneath) is now subject matter for a tour of Seattle's past, especially its unsavory part. The network of abandoned rooms and paths is interesting, but the stories and tales of prostitutes, thieves, and prominent residents really brings the area to life. A fascinating glimpse into the city's heritage.

When you first get inside, the guide sits up front on a desk and gives a fun, colorful history of the city. That part was perhaps the most interesting part of the tour (for me). After the presentation, they split us up into groups and the tour began. While they do warn that nothing has been restored, I wasn't quite prepared for what everything looked like. I'm not sure what I was expecting but what I saw wasn't it. A lot of the places we walked past were just the "backdoor" to the stores on the topside where things were placed for storage. Other places had a bunch of junk and rusty bed frames and whatnot dumped off, abandoned in a corner. For the history, I'd give it a 5 - a lot of fun facts, presented in a way that even months later, I still remember quite a bit of it. For the visual part of it, I'd give it a 2 or 3. It was nothing remarkable. Should you go? That's debatable - kinda iffy on that. Should you bring the kids? Unless you have kids who really, REALLY want to see it, I don't think it's worth paying their admission. Younger kids, for sure, will be bored and get antsy since standing in a huddle around an obscure pile of rubbish, listening to the guide's story of how it got there is not a child's idea of fun.
