DOWNTOWN. A popular restaurant by day, the Alibi Room really comes alive at night. Owned by a group of filmmakers, the club works to support independent films and their creators, by fostering an artistic dialogue among patrons and making scripts available for public perusal. If that's a bit heavy for you, just come and dance to the mixed rhythms of rotating DJs or enjoy one of their specialty vodka drinks. You'll also find live music from time to time, along with a great wine list and tasty appetizers. A real local favorite, Alibi plays host to everyone from the eccentric to the street smart.

CAPITOL HILL. Recessed corners draped in rich purple and red fabrics create a perfect place to chill and sip a cocktail. Aspiring to a North African aesthetic, Capitol Club's lounge boasts an exotic, mysterious, and relaxed ambiance. Signature bar concoctions include the Casbah, a sweet yet tart blend of Absolut Citron, pomegranate molasses, and fresh oranges. The food is equally intriguing; a just-right happy hour menu offers grilled spring asparagus and homemade spanakopeta. With an interior this captivating, you may be loath to venture to the outdoor deck with its amazing city views.

CAPITOL HILL. Although the name alludes to the building's original usage as an auto repair garage, renovations have maintained the industrial appeal while incorporating chrome and vinyl accents. Garage is home to a bar, restaurant, pool hall, and bowling alley frequented by a youngish crowd and fledgling musicians (not surprising since one of the club's partners is Pearl Jam's Mike McCready). It's a bit pricey compared to other pool halls, but the atmosphere goes a long way to recommend it. The food is globally influenced, as are beverages. Bowling lanes and pool tables are priced by the hour.

UNIVERSITY DISTRICT. A definitive "not mainstream" dive, Monkey Pub has become a haven for folks wanting to escape the confines of trendiness and get back to basics: a cold Bear Creek Porter or three, a casual scene, a jukebox with great indie tunes, and a few rounds of pool or pinball uninterrupted by the never-ending "who's got next" inquiry heard at nearby student haunts. Great happy hour drink specials and the occasional live band are additional draws.

FREMONT. This rustic taproom has an all-American appeal, and its walls are adorned with vintage pictures and collectibles. Sidle up to the bar and sample the many microbrews they have on tap, or head to the outdoor patio, which offers a pleasant setting (and great people-watching) when the weather's cooperative. The menu features such hearty fare as a ½-pound saloon burger with cheddar and bacon, Lucile's meatloaf, and a mixed grill with a marinated mahi mahi filet.

DOWNTOWN. An elegant alternative to louder, more high-profile watering holes, this quintessential hotel bar offers an upscale scene complete with a waitstaff dressed to the nines, European-inspired decor, and some of the Sound's best cocktails. A Seattle standard since the mid-'70s, Oliver's has won numerous accolades for its classic martinis. Add in an eclectic lunch menu with the likes of a panini misto sandwich (portabellas, grilled eggplant, and roasted peppers) and Dungeness crab cakes with paprika-parmesan fries, and it's little wonder that Oliver's is such a closely guarded secret of downtown's well-heeled crowd.

BELLTOWN. This casual joint with retro styling is one of Seattle's best places to score a perfectly mixed martini. Although the place can get crowded, you'll find a cool contingent of patrons ready to increase their beverage repertoire. Martinis, served with vodka or gin, come in a 10-oz. glass and in a variety of formulations. Choose from the Feng Shui martini, the Mexi-Tini, the Flir-Tini, or a host of others. If you're particular about your drink, they're happy to craft something to your specifications. You'll also find a good selection of single malt scotches and a menu of creative sandwiches and appetizers to help combat the effects of the alcohol.

DOWNTOWN. Sexy and reserved, this hotel bar is a favorite spot thanks to its beautiful interior and attractive patrons, who work in tandem to create a scene worthy of a fashion magazine. The place's popularity also stems from a tantalizing mix of New York City style and Seattle attitude. The posh bar specializes in great martinis and also offers a menu with designer dishes inspired by global cuisines. If those tidbits aren't enough to satiate, you're free to order from the restaurant's broader menu. When you go, don stylish trappings, and assume an air of ennui. W revels in a see-and-be-seen ambience and is ideal for before- or after-dinner drinks.
