BELLTOWN. Dim and atmospheric, this venue presents entertainment in a variety of guises. Most frequently, the place is a dance club, spinning hip-hop and disco from its repertoire of musical genres. At other times, Re-bar hosts theater performances; notable productions try to expand cultural ground, and some put a contemporary – and often gay – spin on classic works. UNIVERSITY DISTRICT. A definitive "not mainstream" dive, Monkey Pub has become a haven for folks wanting to escape the confines of trendiness and get back to basics: a cold Bear Creek Porter or three, a casual scene, a jukebox with great indie tunes, and a few rounds of pool or pinball uninterrupted by the never-ending "who's got next" inquiry heard at nearby student haunts. Great happy hour drink specials and the occasional live band are additional draws.

CAPITOL HILL. Sit back and enjoy salsa and swing music and dancing performances, or join in the dancing yourself (after a brief lesson, of course); Century Ballroom affords the opportunity to do both. An extensive schedule of dance classes means you can cultivate your craft beforehand; alternatively, quick lessons are frequently offered before the action gets going on most evenings. Occasionally, the dance floor clears and energetic musical acts take to the stage. At shows, a minimum food charge of $10 per person applies.

BALLARD. Known locally as the "Double T," this nightspot features a smorgasbord of American music on a weekly basis, and performances range from zydeco, bluegrass, and country to rock, folk, and jazz. In addition to great live music, the Tractor also offers tasty, down-home cooking, including BBQ. Completing the distinctly American scene are walls decorated with old tractor parts and farming implements. Past acts have included John Wesley Harding, Kristin Hersh, J Mascis, Victoria Williams, and the Austin Lounge Lizards. Cash only at the door; Visa and Mastercard accepted at the bar.

CAPITOL HILL. Recessed corners draped in rich purple and red fabrics create a perfect place to chill and sip a cocktail. Aspiring to a North African aesthetic, Capitol Club's lounge boasts an exotic, mysterious, and relaxed ambiance. Signature bar concoctions include the Casbah, a sweet yet tart blend of Absolut Citron, pomegranate molasses, and fresh oranges. The food is equally intriguing; a just-right happy hour menu offers grilled spring asparagus and homemade spanakopeta. With an interior this captivating, you may be loath to venture to the outdoor deck with its amazing city views.

PIONEER SQUARE. Thanks to healthy doses of French Quarter charm, Big Easy-style cooking, and terrific live music, this establishment ably pleases, and its relatively close proximity to the city's main sporting venues gives it added appeal on game days. A schedule of regional jazz, blues, zydeco and Dixieland bands is occasionally complemented by national acts. And since the stage is right in the center of the dining room, there's really not a bad seat in the house. The wide-ranging menu features Creole and Cajun specialties. New Orleans is also a participant in the neighborhood's "joint cover" nights – when a cover charge is paid at one club, admission is granted at ten other Pioneer Square clubs.

PIONEER SQUARE. Convenient for sports-lovers catching the Mariners in American League action at Safeco Field or the Seahawks in NFL action at Seahawks Stadium, this bar is a favorite with fans, thanks to all of the sports memorabilia adorning the walls. With something like 30 televisions, it's also a great place to catch the game when you can't get tickets, or to celebrate pre- or post-game. Terrific pub grub and mugs of ice cold beer are standard at the two-level watering hole, and while it may not be filled to capacity on non-game days, just wait till the Seahawks win!
