MADISON PARK. This friendly, local place is a favorite with folks in the neighborhood, who often relax in the cozy surroundings and chat with whoever's around. You'll find a good selection of beers, including about a dozen drafts, and there's also pub food for added energy (burgers and sandwiches, along with a variety of hot dinner specials). TVs scattered throughout the space ensure that you won't miss big games, and since the pub is open late, you know that you'll be in good company, especially on busy weekend nights. On mild days, try to score a sidewalk seat to scope out passersby and enjoy the sun.

WEST SEATTLE. Decorated with wrought iron fixtures and painted tangerine and aubergine hues, this sleek neighborhood pub perfectly mirrors the upstart attitude of its West Seattle environs. In the evenings, area professionals stop in to enjoy a microbrew or glass of wine at the refreshingly subdued bar. The menu offers a unique take on the concept of pub grub, winning patrons with dishes like Spanish-style fried calamari with lemon-garlic aioli, chicken jambalaya with andouille sausage, and enchiladas. Innovative egg dishes (served at weekend brunches) have become somewhat of a local legend.

DOWNTOWN. This character-laden hotspot offers authentic Irish pub atmosphere with food, drink, and entertainment to match. Inside, you'll find quintessential dark-wood bar areas, cozy nooks, and plenty of "pub" ambiance. The place tends to get packed quickly after the sun goes down, and many nights, Fadó features live music – dancing is always encouraged – as well as special events to celebrate soccer (football!) matches. To mark your visit, stop by the gift shop and pick up a few things Irish. And remember to arrive early to snag a table and avoid a cover charge (which is cash-only).

Enjoying a stately location and spectacular views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains, this red-brick pub has earned a loyal following with its friendly service, good food, and terrific selection of local and imported ales, ciders, and stouts. So homey is Hilltop that it's not uncommon to come in on consecutive nights and find the same folks sitting in the same spots and enjoying the same great beers. An added draw is the gourmet menu, which features spicy gumbo, steak and Guinness pot pie, fresh zesty fish tacos, and signature, Asian-inspired halibut cakes.

BALLARD. With a friendly clientele that includes tourists, blue collar folks, young professionals, and occasional students, Molly's may seem more like a family reunion at times than a bar full of complete strangers. Here things are as they should be: the Guinness pours rich and dark while tenors sing the praises of fair Irish women – and that's just on Wednesday nights! In addition to live music, Molly's sponsors pool tournaments and trivia nights. A traditional pub menu is available, and a full Irish breakfast is served every Sunday.

BALLARD. A quintessential German pub, this local institution places a premium on the things that matter: excellent food, drink, and cheer like you'd expect to find at an Old Country alehouse. Indeed, you won't find gaudy decor and flashing neon lights that hide shortcomings – simple wooden chairs and paneling are as flashy as it gets. What you will find, though, is a friendly crowd that enjoys Spaten, Hofbrauhaus, and Moose Drool draughts alongside good conversation and an order of wiener schnitzel.

GREENWOOD. When Northsiders are looking for a homey place to drink and chat with friends, this alehaus often springs to mind. Appropriately named after the German word for "cheers," the place has the look and feel of an Old World beer hall, from its mural of a lovely Oktoberfest mistress to ornate beer steins. After wetting your whistle with a few liters of the house hefeweizen, check out the menu, which boasts everything from brats and kraut to enormous Bavarian pretzels with spicy mustard.
