DOWNTOWN. A business-friendly steak house in the heart of the financial district, Metropolitan Grill has been a Seattle favorite for years. Dry-aged, prime-grade beef is a steak-lover's dream, although a good selection of pastas and salads rounds out the menu as well. The wine list is exemplary, focusing on reds that go with the beef-laden menu. Service is helpful but unobtrusive, and the dessert tray is too good to pass up.

PIONEER SQUARE. For great Italian sausages, salamis, meatballs, or pork, try Salumi, whose name means "dry-cured meat" in Italian. Meats can be purchased individually as an entree or by the pound as deli take-away. If you prefer a lighter, less meat-intensive meal, order a salad, vegetable dish, or one of their pastas. A comfortable interior with tin ceilings and wooden floors makes guests feel at home, as does a large communal table where guests can share conversation with their meals. Wine is available by the glass or bottle.

DOWNTOWN. Tuxedo-clad waiters set the tone for a Midwest classic that's staked a claim in the Northwest. Known for tableside presentations (yes, that's a live lobster on the cart), this steak house is famous for its 24-ounce porterhouse and its hearty portions. Sides must be ordered separately at additional cost, and the menu offers seafood, chicken, and veal for those who don't relish red meat. More than 175 wine complements are available as well. Expectedly, the atmosphere is plush, and Sinatra croons in the background to add to the whole experience.

REDMOND. Nara is noted for exceptionally fresh sushi and terrific Japanese fare. The food, along with elegant atmosphere, make the restaurant a memorable experience. Lots of rolls and sashimi provide plenty of choices, and combination plates (including sushi) at lunch and dinner further expand the options. The Makunouchi combination is a highly recommended plate that features sushi, tempura, chicken teriyaki, and stir-fried vegetables. Noodle and donburi dishes also prove delicious.

EASTLAKE. Comfortable and unpretentious, Serafina has been a Seattle favorite for years. Its cuisine draws on rustic traditions of the Italian countryside and is eminently satisfying. Representative dishes include buckwheat pasta, slow-cooked lamb shanks, braised rabbit, homemade veal meatballs, pumpkin-leek ravioli, and a ragu of duck, veal, and pork. You'll also find steamed mussels, rich sausages, and wild-mushroom risotto. Dessert options include a luscious chocolate-hazelnut torte, sweet profiteroles, and a homey rhubarb crisp.

CAPITOL HILL. Come early if you've got a hankering for the sweet Southern soul food this family-owned establishment dishes up. Whatever the crowded pair of dining rooms lacks in space and elegance is made up for in the quality (and quantity) of down-home cooking. Classics like buttermilk fried chicken, catfish, barbecue, vinegary collard greens, and macaroni and cheese (with onions and mushrooms) are prepared simply and served piping hot. Dessert is predictably heavenly: red velvet cake with buttercream frosting and strawberry shortcake are perfect finishing touches.

REDMOND. There's no hidden agenda at this Redmond stalwart, where piping hot, slow-roasted coffee combines with tasty pastries, sweets, and sandwiches to cater to just about any type of craving. In fact, this quirky coffee house roasts its own beans, giving their espressos and cappuccinos a bit of homemade potency. Enjoy your favorite pick-me-ups in their cozy seating area, where you'll find several pieces of comfy antique furniture to make you feel at home. On the first Saturday of each month, Victor's features spoken word poetry competitions.

DOWNTOWN. If you can't get a reservation for lunch or dinner at Campagne and still want to experience the award-winning, bistro-style restaurant, then try the café for breakfast. You can't go wrong, and you can visit the Market while in the area. A quintessential Parisian decor provides a delightful backdrop for a fine morning meal, including freshly squeezed orange juice and steaming coffee. Try French toast made with brioche and bourbon egg batter or a fluffy omelet stuffed with potatoes and laced with rosemary.

DOWNTOWN. Whether it's rare or well-done, prime corn-fed beef is this steak house's trademark. A favorite of the business set, the place exudes class. Each cut of meat is sublime, boasting sensational flavor and texture thanks to the signature "cooked from the top down" technique. Ŕ la cart items include gulf shrimp in a creole rémoulade sauce and crispy French-fried onion rings. If you make it to dessert, consider the luscious chocolate praline encore or maybe chocolate chunk bread pudding.

WEST SEATTLE. Westsiders take pride in JaK's, whose name is actually an acronym for owners Jeff Page and Ken Hughes. Here, sizzling 21-ounce porterhouses, gargantuan burgers, and Caribbean-style pork medallions beckon with seductive aromas and accurate preparations. If red meat and chops aren't your bag, there are plenty of fish and seafood options. But be forewarned – unless you arrive very early, the wait can approach two hours, and reservations are not accepted.
