BALLARD. This quaint – if a tad noisy – little bake shop is a must for any sweet tooth gallivanting around the Ballard area. The lattes are hot and frothy, and the early morning appetite is appeased by everything from ham and cheese-stuffed pastries to croissants and brioches, all of them fresh-made and tasty beyond belief. After receiving your morning jolt of joe, go ahead and grab yourself a little something to go – a slice of quiche Lorraine for lunch or a cinnamony Appenzell nut twist might do the trick.

DOWNTOWN. This hip cafe is the brainchild of celebrated restaurateur Drew Nieporent, who is also behind Nobu London and San Juan Capistrano's celebrated Coach House. Stylish, cosmopolitan Earth & Ocean sets itself apart from other downtown hotel eateries. While the well-heeled set makes no secret of its admiration of the kitchen's innovative main course creations, desserts like Pie á la Mode and Sub Zero Moments (a trio of seasonal sorbets) earn particular esteem. Al fresco seating along Fourth Avenue is available. Sunday dinner served in March and November.

CAPITOL HILL. A trusty Capitol Hill standby since the late '80s, Vivace is known all over the area for its beautiful coffee beverages (in fact, the cafe's motto, "una bella tazza di caffe," means just that). Here, shots of espresso and cups of latte (no drip coffees here!) reach new levels of vigor, thanks in large part to the owners' extensive knowledge of the Italian roasting process and to the strong hints of caramel present in each sip. After getting your fix from the barista, have a seat at a cozy, cafe-style table and take in the stylish scene: checkered tile floors, European advertising posters, and a young, trendy clientele.

DOWNTOWN. At the upscale Gelatiamo ice cream parlor, located downtown, patrons can enjoy Old Country pastries along with potent espressos, cappuccinos, and lattes. Stop in around noon, and you'll be able to savor a hot panini prior to your favorite sugar-dusted treat. Of course, the wise choice is always a few scoops of their gelato, a dense Italian-style ice cream that's nothing short of addictive. In particular, the frutti di bosco (mixed fruit) and classic "cioccolato" (chocolate) earn high marks.
