Overview

For a town that played such a significant role in the Industrial Revolution, Sheffield is surprisingly attractive. It was even voted the "World's Cleanest Industrial City." Sheffield boasts a glaciated, green countryside that includes the popular Peak District National Park, and the new 350-acre Earth Center is a testament to the city's "green future." As the fourth largest city in Britain, its major industry continues to be steel production, and in particular cutlery. To appreciate the history of this "European Steel Capital," visit the Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet museum. Sheffield is also home to two universities, Hallam and Sheffield, giving the city a youthful energy. It's become something of a sports hub as well, thanks to the Steelers (hockey) and Sharks (basketball). For shopping, visit the famous Meadowhall complex, and for world-class entertainment, take in a show at Sheffield Arena.
