About Singapore Restaurants
Singaporeans often quip that eating is one of the very few sports the city state excels at -- and without a doubt, locals take their food seriously, happily driving across the island just to have the best noodles or curry in town. Hawker centers and food courts, with dozens of individual stalls each selling different things, are your best option for sampling a variety of cheap and quick local food. Newton Food Centre and Lau Pa Sat, in particular, open late and are popular post-clubbing supper options, but the ones that have kept under the tourist radar, like Old Airport Road, East Coast Park and People's Park, are also worth a try. There's also plenty of fresh seafood, so make sure you pencil in a visit to the East Coast Seafood Centre, where over a dozen restaurants serve up fish so fresh that it's still alive when you order it.
On the more upscale end of things, there's a plethora of casual and fine dining options, with everything from traditional French and Italian to modern Asian and Australian. If you're adventurous, take the opportunity to sample something different, as many restaurants have inventive takes on old classics -- an Old World dish with a tantalizing hint of Asian spice, perhaps, or an unexpected combination of ingredients that together produce a veritable melody of flavors.
