MATAMOROS.
Located some 30 minutes from South Padre Island, this charming Mexican village is a favorite destination with sightseers and shoppers. The town's markets are excellent places to find deals on everything from silver and leather to pottery and handmade jewelry, and bartering for better prices is quite commonplace. As evening approaches, crowds get distinctly younger, and cars full of college-aged kids come to take advantage of the lower drinking age, cheap prices on food and spirits, and a vibrant nightlife scene.
For a day trip to Matamoros from the U.S., you will not be required to show a passport, proof of citizenship or obtain a visa. At the border, parking is $5-$6 and a taxi ride is $6-$8. There are also shuttle buses for free or you can walk in (20 mins).

Metamoros was a blast. This is coming from a college aged kid who visited there during his spring break in South Padre Island. The bars were great, especially Crazy Lazy. The locals were also VERY friendly. We met two guys named Luis and Pepe. They drove us around town and showed us the top spots around Metamoros. I highly recommend Metamoros for a day trip. However, I discourage you from staying overnight there. If you want to tour Metamoros for more that a day, stay in South Padre or Brownsville. In closing, if you're around the Rio Grande Valley and have some time to spare, definitely visit Metamoros. There are cheap goods at the market, good bars, and friendly people.
