St. Andrews locals built the blockhouse during the war of 1812. Though the feared attack never materialized, British loyalists in New Brunswick worried that the United States would eventually do battle with their Canadian neighbors. Originally, twelve of these fortification blockhouses were built; the one on Water Street is the only survivor and is one of Canada's 70 major historic sites. During tourist season, guides are available to answer questions.
