St. Croix Island is the site of a failed French colonization attempt. In 1604 Samuel de Champlain and Sieur de Mons attempted to found a community four miles from the mouth of the St. Croix River. Nearly half of the settlers died during the first winter, and in the spring the colonists sailed across the Bay of Fundy and founded Port Royal. The mainland portion of the park features interpretive exhibits and a walking trail. The island itself is only accessible by private boat.   (© 10Best)
