COLD SPRING. Officially known as Assumption Chapel, this lovely granite structure commemorates the advance of a locust plague in April, 1877. When it appeared that the creatures would inundate the town and decimate its crops, residents gathered for a day of prayer sanctioned by the governor. Amazingly, a snowstorm descended, freezing the insects and preserving the town. In thanks, the chapel was built to God and to the Virgin Mary. It was redone in 1952 after damage to the original in the late 19th century. Grasshopper Chapel is arguably the small town's most notable attraction.
