ZIMMERMAN. Resting some 30 miles southeast of St. Cloud, this refuge seeks to maintain natural wildlife havens, bridging the biological terrain between forest and prairie ecosystems. Migrating birds find a particular home, as do deer, fox, beaver, bobcat, porcupine and flying squirrel (to name but a few). Land layout, plant life and water levels are also maintained to foster a traditional environment. More than 30,000 acres are available for hiking, fishing, skiing and snowshoeing. Wildlife observation is also a prominent pastime.
