8. Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge

ZIMMERMAN.   Resting some 30 miles southeast of St. Cloud, this refuge seeks to maintain natural wildlife havens, bridging the biological terrain between forest and prairie ecosystems. Migrating birds find a particular home, as do deer, fox, beaver, bobcat, porcupine and flying squirrel (to name but a few). Land layout, plant life and water levels are also maintained to foster a traditional environment. More than 30,000 acres are available for hiking, fishing, skiing and snowshoeing. Wildlife observation is also a prominent pastime.   (© 10Best)
