WAITE PARK. Operated by the same family since 1973, this place has been around since the 1920s, when it was originally a speakeasy. These days, the log cabin restaurant offers a variety of rooms, many with great views and all with individual character. Steak and seafood are prominent, as indicated by Canadian walleye, stuffed Alaskan halibut, porterhouse and smothered sirloin. Other possibilities include BBQ pork ribs, roast duck, herb-crusted rack of lamb, and chicken boursin. Don't miss the popovers, slathered with honey butter. Great wines and scotches too.

A full bar also offers plenty of options, and the weekday happy hour is perennially well-attended. Other evening attractions include live music and drink specials.

COLD SPRING. For a pleasant meal without a lot of fanfare or pretense, this spacious, comfortable restaurant is a favorite with local folks. Many come for prime rib or walleye, but The Great Blue Heron is especially well-liked for its broad menu, which promises a little of everything. If you crave seafood or more elegant dishes, they're available; so, too, are sandwiches, pizza, and both Italian and Mexican entrees. A well-stocked salad bar also takes care of lighter appetites. Cocktails can be had in the lounge, and nightly specials further expand dining options.

WAITE PARK. A bit "out of this world," this sci-fi joint earns kudos for creative decor – as the outer space mural on its 30-foot, domed ceiling, and its quirky collection of alien statues attest. Of course, a restaurant is only as good as its menu, and this intergalactic oddity wins praise with award-winning BBQ ribs, fire-roasted pizzas, quesadillas, and Cajun-style burgers. If adult beverages are in order, check out the Bar from Mars and drinks like the Cosmic Bulldog, Mars Mudslide and Lunar Island Tea.
