  1. Point Udall on St. Croix is the easternmost point in the United States.
  2. St. Croix has the largest land mass of the three inhabited U. S. Virgin Islands. It's 28 miles long, 7 miles wide, and sits 40 miles south of St. Thomas and the 50 other islands that make up the chain.
  3. The population of St. Croix is 50,000. Locals, referred to as "Cruzans" or "Crucians," speak English and sometimes a Creole patois as well.
  4. Today, the American flag flies over St. Croix, but in the past, the banners of Spain, Holland, France, and England have prominently graced the island.
  5. The dry moat at Whim Plantation was not built to hold water. Rather, it was designed to trap air to cool the main house.
  6. St. Croix is home to the only underwater national park in the world, located at Buck Island Reef National Park. Treat yourself to a paddle along the marked, underwater snorkeling trail.
  7. Year-round, daytime highs in the 80s and nighttime lows in the 70s characterize St. Croix's weather. Rainfall is minimal with an annual average of 50 inches. Due to the scarcity of water, locals keep cistern "catch basins" on their roofs to collect rain for household use.
  8. The ruins of more than 100 old plantations still dot St. Croix's landscape. However, several estates have been restored and are open to the public.
  9. St. Croix was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 when he landed at the Salt River estuary.
  10. As a young man, Alexander Hamilton – author of the "Federalist Papers" – was employed at the apothecary in Christiansted.
