At the base of Signal Hill you'll find quaint Quidi Vidi (pronounced "kitty vitty") village, where the oldest home in St. John's is located. Drive through the village to find Quidi Vidi Battery, built by the French during their 1762 occupation of St. John's. The French soldiers were stationed here to guard against attacking ships entering the harbor via the inlet. The Battery house recreates the living quarters of those soldiers. Guided tours are available. If visiting during early summer months, look closely at the seaside when standing on the battery's ramparts, and you just might catch a glimpse of a passing whale.
