WEBSTER GROVES. Classic old favorites are updated and enlivened at this colorful and laid-back restaurant. Meatloaf is made with veal instead of hamburger and blended with red peppers, spinach, and mushrooms. Piquant tomato gravy replaces the traditional ketchup. Creamed spinach is made more flavorful with smoked Gouda cheese, the taste of mashed potatoes is heightened with roasted garlic. Desserts feature the irresistible caramel pecan apple pie made with tangy Granny Smith apples.

Both the decor and the menu are interestingly eclectic at this laid-back restaurant located near the Anheuser-Busch brewery. While the menu includes steaks, chicken and vegetarian options, Frazer's really specializes in seafood dishes, with crab cakes and Salmon Frazer being standouts. They also feature specialty pizzas with wafer-thin crusts and an array of other innovative menu items. The avocado salad is a mesclun salad with cumin vinaigrette and tossed with celery, tomatoes, red onions, toasted walnuts and huge slices of avocado. Reservations are recommended.

The menu is never the same at this extremely popular California-styled restaurant, where the creative cuisine combines flavors and textures with superb flair. Sample whole roasted black bass on a bed of Israeli couscous mixed with sautéed bok choy and chanterelle mushrooms, or fettuccine with scallops, portobello mushrooms, asparagus, and sherry mushroom sauce. Reservations are an absolute necessity.

This popular, multilevel restaurant is located in the Benton Park district. With its exposed brick walls, polished wood floors, huge windows, and old fashioned bar, it exudes a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. Start with the honey mustard shrimp or stuffed mushrooms in a light cheese sauce. The seasonal menu features hand-cut steaks, lamb, and veal chops, and such fresh fish and seafood dishes as Tuscan sea bass. All are prepared with a marvelous blend of herbs, marinades, and sauces.
